Japanese Breakfast is set to release their latest studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women), on March 21, 2025. The album will be the project's fourth studio album. Japanese Breakfast founder and lead vocalist Michelle Zauner talked about the album in an exclusive interview with GQ Korea on August 27, 2024:
"The third album was about being happy. And I used a lot of instruments. There were a lot of horns and strings. So when I was playing for that album, I didn't play the guitar much. I just sang. That's why I missed the guitar a lot. I play guitar a lot on this album. And it's a depressing album."
The singer continued:
"I'm tired of the happy topic. Hahahahaha. So I went back to the depressing topic. In my opinion, a little mature content. The third album was all yellow, and I used a lot of bright colors, but I'm so tired of that style, so maybe this album will be in a different color."
Zauner added:
"I always want to make it different from my last album. And I've been thinking a lot about my age lately."
Japanese Breakfast achieved global commercial success with their third studio album, Jubilee, which was released on June 4, 2021. The album charted within the top 100 spot on charts such as Billboard 200, German and Scottish album charts, among others.
