Pirates of the Caribbean is one of Johnny Depp's most popular works, and it continues to find an audience even years after its initial release. The actor has been in many projects that would make him appear "unrecognizable". His chameleonic transformations through his roles are what have made him a sensation.

One of these roles is that of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise based on Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean theme park ride. The series began with the 2003 film subtitled The Curse of the Black Pearl and received four follow-up projects. They all showed Jack as a pirate captain going on some wild adventures and getting into sword fights with all sorts of people for a number of reasons. What stuck out the most were his idiosyncrasies, but that's not all there is to his character.

This enigmatic captain was driven by his pursuits for some peculiar reasons. Some of them might be hiding in plain sight and take a long time for fans to figure out. One of them was recently shared by youtuber Alex on his YouTube channel, Starkverse. Let's dive into the details he shared.

Why is Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films obsessed with the Black Pearl? Details revealed

Captain Jack Sparrow's obsession with his ship, the Black Pearl can be described by this simple quote.

"Wherever we want to go, we go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails. That's what a ship needs. But what a ship is...what the Black Pearl really is...is freedom."

Alex from Starkverse has gone a little further to explain how it connects to the title, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Why is there a curse attached to this precious ship and why does it define freedom for Jack? As it turns out, there's a whole back story for this seemingly mysterious situation.

The crew on this ship is cursed but the film doesn't reveal a whole lot why the ship itself is cursed. However, it was eventually revealed in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom, a book that offers a backstory for Jack. It says that Beckett hired Jack to find the treasure on an island called Kerma, with a ship called Wicked Wench.

However, he didn't reveal the treasure to Beckett, fearing Beckett would enslave the islanders. Beckett realizes that and burns this ship. By this time, Jack had become so attached to the ship that he dives into the ocean, hoping to recover it. Thanks to a deal with Davy Jones, Jack survives. Davy recovers the ship, which, although cursed, gets renamed The Black Pearl .

On a SubReddit thread, u/bubonis also explained it, referring to the available resources related to the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

"The Black Pearl was originally the merchant ship Wicked Wench. Sparrow was helmsman thereof and eventually became captain, then served as a privateer for the East India Trading Company. After a double-cross, the Wicked Wench was destroyed, and took Jack with it. But Jack struck a deal with Davy Jones; Jack was allowed to live and the Wicked Wench was reborn and rechristened as the Black Pearl, with Jack as the captain. The deal with Jones was the first curse of the Black Pearl as the Pearl was an integral part of the deal Jack made with Jones."

It further revealed:

"After Jack's crew mutinied and Barbosa took over, they stole and spent the Aztec gold using the Pearl as their vessel. This was the second curse of the Black Pearl, though it's very doubtful that Barbosa et al knew about the original curse. It's this second curse that gave the Pearl its supernatural abilities, the fog bank, the appearance of a rotting ship, etc. When the Aztec gold was returned the Pearl returned to its original state, which is to say it lost the second curse but still held the first."
