The upcoming disaster film Twisters (2024) is based on the story of storm-chasing groups working to find out the reason behind a tornado outbreak in the state of Oklahoma. Director Lee Isaac Chung has worked on the movie alongside Universal Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
What initially was announced in 2020 as a remake of the original movie Twister (1996) later developed into a stand-alone sequel project. However, there have been multiple questions among fans regarding the new rendition's connection to the 1996 disaster classic.
The original film was a hit in terms of box office numbers as well as sound design and visual effects. It even earned multiple Academy Award nominations. As per the latest reports, Twisters will explore the present-day story of the 90s' hit. The official synopsis of the movie reads:
"Kate Carter, a retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist, is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies."
Is Twisters a sequel or a remake?
In 2020, it was initially announced that Universal Pictures would recreate the 1996 disaster movie Twister. However, plans changed later as director Lee Isaac joined the team with Mark L. Smith (on screenplay) and Joseph Kosinski (story).
Later, the confirmation came that Twisters would not be a reboot of Helen Hunt's original movie. It will rather be a standalone sequel with several newcomers joining the cast. In the first movie, Jo (played by Helen Hunt) embarks on a mission to launch a sensor-studded device called Dorothy to predict tornadoes and equip the storm-warning system.
However, the new movie will revolve around a new story with a fresh group of storm chasers starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. Kiernan Shipka will also be a part of the cast. Kate Carter (Edgar-Jones), a former chaser has had a troubled past living through dangerous tornadoes.
With support from her friend Javi (played by Ramos), she eventually returns to field operations. While on her journey, Kate crosses paths with a famous meteorologist and social media star Tyler Owens (Powell). The novel unit soon finds themselves tangled in converging storm systems.
Will there be a direct connection between the original story and the 2024 movie?
According to reports, viewers do not need to be familiar with the plot of the original movie to relate to the story of Twisters (2024). Even though both the films are set in the state of Oklahoma, the characters Bill and Jo Harding from Twister (1996) have not been directly mentioned in the 2024 spin-off.
Director Chung confirmed the same in a statement saying:
"I studied science in university, so this is probably a nerdy answer. I see it as a new science experiment. It's the same world. We don't have the same characters, but it's a new experiment.
He further added:
"There are a lot of nods to the original, but I hope I've made it its own thing."
Star Edgar-Jones has given her nod to the same saying:
"It feels like a real next chapter, whilst also having so much love for the original."
Actor Glen Powell has also confirmed that the story will be original. The movie will be a standalone project set in a timeline exploring events almost 28 years later.
