The Toxic Avenger is an upcoming dark comedy film, which is finally getting a wide theatrical release. This is unfortunate considering how long it has been since its world premiere. The film debuted at the Fantastic Fest, all the way back in September 2023. It has been two years since it has been stuck in a distribution woes.
Initially, it was slated to be released the same year as its premiere. So, the people who couldn't catch it at the Fantastic Fest were hoping to catch it on a big screen near them.
The film had a difficult time securing a distributor. It supposedly had to do with the film's graphic content. After all, it's a spatter film that focuses on gore and graphic violence. So, the film just couldn't see the light of the day until now.
Cineverse studio, which was behind last year's surprise box office hit - Terrifier 3, is backing The Toxic Avenger. Deadline has reported that the film will hit the US theaters on August 29, 2025. The best part might just be that it will be the film's unrated version.
Since the film's title mentions an "Avenger," some people might be wondering whether it is a part of Marvel. The answer is both Yes and No! The Toxic Avenger was a Marvel Comics series that ran for a short period. However, the upcoming Peter Dinklage-led film is reportedly not a part of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).
Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger: Is it a part of Marvel? Answer explored
Macon Blair's upcoming The Toxic Avenger is a reboot of Lloyd Kaufman's same-name film series that started in 1984. The original film received three film sequels and was later turned into different forms. One of them happens to be a comic book series from Marvel Comics. So, the film has a link to Marvel in this regard.
However, there is no official source or reports confirming the Peter Dinklage-led film's connection to a broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU is returning this year with much-anticipated releases like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. They will bring some old and new faces to their prevalent superhero universe.
The Toxic Avenger is also a superhero film, but it combines the elements of black comedy and spatter films. It is supposed to be filled with graphic content and after its world premiere, it was deemed “not safe enough to market,” for the same reason. So, it will most likely not be connected with the Marvel studio films that have a wider appeal. So, while The Toxic Avenger is a short-lived comic book series published by Marvel Comics, it is not a part of Marvel Studio's slate of films.
The Toxic Avenger: Everything we know so far about this upcoming 2025 release
Macon Blair has written and directed The Toxic Avenger, which is scheduled to be released on August 29, 2025, ahead of the Labour Day weekend. It is a reboot of Lloyd Kaufman's old film series, which included four parts. The series began with Kaufman's 1984 film, which reportedly shook the audience to the core upon its release.
Blair's film's synopsis reads:
"Set in a fantasy world following janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage), who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters, and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son."
The film has been picked for distribution by Cineverse, who also backed last year's Terrifier 3. So, the writer-director Macon Blair offered a statement about the film's upcoming unrated version release. He said:
"Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh."
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) stars as the titular character. Per sources, the rest of the cast will include Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, and Jonny Coyne.
