Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley starrer The Substance ended up being one of the biggest films of the year, surprising fans with its gripping storyline and stunning performances. As the film continues to sweep award nominations, speculations surrounding a re-release of the film in theatres are also abuzz amidst upcoming Oscar nominations.
The Substance was released in September 2024 and tasted sweet success at the box office with a worldwide collection of $78.1 million. It also won Best Screenplay at Cannes, and several nominations from different award shows were given to both Qualley and Moore.
As of now, the film is re-releasing in the United States in over 350 theatres for fans to enjoy the cinematic masterpiece once again on January 17. Led by Demi Moore, who won a Golden Globe for her performance, and Margaret Qualley, who equally received acclaim for her portrayal, the film is now also eyeing Oscar nominations that are all set to roll out later this month.
What is The Substance about?
The film revolves around Demi Moore's Elisabeth Sparkle, a middle-aged actress who has a faltering career and is desperate for the success and glamour she used to have. She chooses to undergo a scientific experiment from a black market that allows her to produce a young, fresh, beautiful version of herself with whom she shares a consciousness.
The body horror film garnered much attention and praise from critics and the audience who lauded its fresh take on the genre and how it explored the complexities of stardom and the desires that come with it. Talking about the film, Moore told Indie Wire,
“The real anchor and throughline for me was the violence that we have against ourselves. And I think that is universal.”
Demi Moore won her first Golden Globe for The Substance
Demi Moore's masterful portrayal in the film even bagged her her first-ever Golden Globe win for Best Female Actor In A Musical Or Comedy.
Accepting her award on stage as she dressed up in a gorgeous golden gown, the actress said,
“I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor and I’m just so humbled and so grateful.”
She further added of the film,
“(Then) I had this magical, bold, courageous, out of the box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called ‘The Substance,’ and the universe told me that you’re not done.”
Moore is also a popular contender for this year's Oscars, along with Margaret Qualley, who brilliantly portrayed Sue, the younger version of the starlet in the film. As per critics, Director Coralie Fargeat is also likely to win a nomination.
The Oscar nominations will be announced towards the end of this month. They were previously supposed to be announced by January 19 but have now been delayed because of the Los Angeles fire.
