Netflix's latest documentary, The Lost Children, is based on the true story of four children who survived a plane crash in the Amazon Rainforest.

The documentary outlines the horrific incident of May 2023, which left four Mucutuy children alone in a rainforest when their plane crashed, leaving their mother and two other adults dead.

The four children were accompanied by their mother, Magdalena Mucutuy, and two male adults, who were reportedly flying to see their father in their hometown.

What's more horrifying is how young these siblings were. The youngest one, Cristin, was only 11 months old. The oldest sibling, Lesly, was 13 years old, followed by Soleiny (nine) and Tien Noriel (four).

The children couldn't survive in such extreme rainforest conditions considering their ages. But The Lost Children outlines their brevity and the combined efforts of the military and the indigenous groups to find these children.

After it was established that the four children were alive and alone in the dangerous rainforests, home to animals like jaguars and venomous snakes, they mobilized large groups of people under 'Operation Hope' to help find The Lost Children.

Since the news spread about the missing children, Indigenous groups also mobilized to help find these children with their knowledge about these rainforests.

The military bought many more groups to rescue and shouted the children's names as they spread and searched for them. They also played a recording from their grandmother, asking them to stay where they were over helicopters.

The military deployed 100 units in the area where it was assumed the children might be. The documentary also shows how the military has pamphlets advising the kids to stay near the water.

But when the military could not find the siblings, the Indigenous Guard stepped in. They deployed many volunteer groups to help search for the children.

While it seemed their efforts were also in vain, one of the last volunteer groups finally located the children, who were then rescued.

As shown in the documentary The Lost Children, survived alone for almost 40 days in the Colombian Rainforest with no adult, food, or water. The oldest sibling, Lesly, assumed the responsibility for her brothers and became the sole protector in the wilderness.

She recalls killing a venomous snake in the Rainforest after one of the siblings was about to sit on it. The children reportedly survived on fruits they got in the forest and water from a nearby lake.

They also told how they heard their grandmother's voice from the helicopters but couldn't find its source as the vehicle wandered around.

The documentary also hints that the grandmother and aunt were suspicious that the children hid on their own to avoid seeing their father, Manuel Ranoque.

While the documentary does not delve deeper into the accusations, it is worth noting. The documentary reveals that all the siblings are now alive and in the custody of Colombia's welfare service, while their father was arrested on the accusations of abuse.
