The Forge is based on a true story and takes a leaf out of the Bible. Reportedly, the protagonist is modeled on Trudy Ederle, who lived in the 1920s and achieved success.

The makers have stated that the story is essentially about discipleship. Another report suggests that the roles of Isaiah and Joshua are based on Timothy and Paul. Timothy, just like Isaiah, grew up without a father. He was taken care of by his mother and grandparents. Later, he met Paul, who guided him in life.

In an interview with The Baptist Paper, Alex Kendrick spoke about the film and its message. He said,

"We need to expand [the church] not just by evangelism, but by discipling people to follow Jesus."

His brother and the film's producer-co-writer, Stephen Kendrick, stated:

“We have always prioritized the church. Jesus said that we’re going to reach the world through an on-fire church. He focused on His disciples. … He prioritized, first, getting people on fire and in love with the Lord. With each of our films, we want to help the body of Christ get on fire for Jesus, fall in love with Him, make Him their highest priority and their first love, because then they become fruitful and effective to reach the nations. We don’t want to invite the world to come join a lukewarm church.”
