According to Focus Features, Nosferatu helmer, Robert Eggers, is confirmed to return to the big screens for a new werewolf film titled, Werwulf. The movie is already in the works with Sjón joining Eggers, three years after their period drama film, The Northman, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Following Nosferatu's success in terms of critic scores and box-office numbers, the latest development in another monster movie has garnered quite some social media attention. According to ScreenRant, Eggers previously started working on a Frankenstein project but later dropped the idea as he did not consider the script to be going well.

Now, Werwulf is another entry continuing the streak of Focus Features' Bill Skarsgaard starrer, which supposedly can be a potential start to a new Monster Universe. As reported by Variety, Chris Columbus will serve as executive producer on behalf of Maiden Voyage Pictures alongside Eleanor Columbus for the upcoming 13th Century horror story.

Is a potential Monster Universe in works with Robert Eggers?

Robert Eggers has gained much popularity among fans owing to his 2024 horror Christmas hit, Nosferatu, which grossed over $156 million at the global Box Office, per Variety. But, this time Eggers will be bringing werewolves to life and the release date of his much-anticipated new Monster movie, Werwulf, is set for December 25, 2026. Consequently, the obvious question arises whether we can see a new Monster Universe in the coming years.

While there is still no official confirmation on the same, the idea of a new Monster franchise makes sense. The recently released horror film, Wolf Man, reportedly secured low Rotten Tomatoes scores. Moreover, Universal Pictures started off well with its standalone projects and later shifted to multiple spin-offs as well as cross-overs in the Universal Monster franchise.

But, the horror angles of the franchise were eventually overshadowed by action-packed movies—a big example being Tom Cruise's 2017 fantasy action-adventure, The Mummy. Additionally, Nosferatu has outperformed other movies (from recent times) of the original franchise namely, The Last Voyage Of Demeter, Abigail, and The Invisible Man.

Thus, Eggers' Monster franchise, if it happens, will be a brand new look at the Dark Universe, especially for classic horror fans! Moreover, a star-studded cast and a unique look at the monsters(like we saw with Bill Skargard's Count Orlok) are two major things that the audience highly expects from Robert Eggers.

The story of Werwulf is set much before (in 13th Century England) that of Count Orlok's Nosferatu in the timeline and how the two films might be connected is still being kept under wraps. Moreover, Eggers has previously been associated with a Frankenstein movie which, however, did not get completed. Per ScreenRant, Robert Eggers reportedly mentioned in a statement:

"Sometimes you know you've got a dud. I'm super, super excited for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, but when my son was born, I had an unconscious urge, I'm sure because of that, but as I started writing, I was like, "Oh yeah, this is why," but as I started to try to do Frankenstein, which after two weeks, I was like, "There's no way I can do this, it's impossible." It definitely sucked, I’ll tell you that."

So, having been a part of multiple projects adapted from vampires, werewolves and other monsters like Frankenstein, Eggers' inclination towards a potential franchise seems credible. Now that Werwulf is officially in the works, excitement has peaked among fans as they eagerly await cast and plot updates.

What did fans say about Robert Eggers' involvement in a possible Monster Universe?

While some fans have expressed their inclination towards standalone Monster projects, a few definitely want Robert Eggers to continue his streak and make a brand new franchise, something that is long-due but was never materialized.

An X user, commented:

"This is officially the monster verse.. the Eggverse if you will… Eggerverse, maybe? Workshopping."

One user on wrote:

"Make Robert Eggers head of the Dark Universe."

Another user, reshared a Twitter post, noting:

"Robert eggers needs to create the dark universe characters please."

Thus, it is evident that the audience wants Eggers to be at the helm of the upcoming projects in the Monster Universe. Though the 41-year-old filmmaker has not confirmed anything in his statements, it is being speculated that his upcoming project, Werwulf, will be the start of something new.
