In a conversation with Netflix’s Tudum, the movie’s writer and director, Jeremy Saulnier, addressed viewers’ presumptions of Rebel Ridge being based on real-life incidents or people, putting rumors to rest.
Although Saulnier confirms the fictitious nature of the film, he said he wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking true events inspired it. Saulnier discussed the probability of some instances from the movie taking place in real life, saying,
“The film is not based on a particular incident, but elements of it could certainly happen.”

What is Rebel Ridge based on?
Rebel Ridge is a fictional action film featuring Krypton fame Aaron Pierre. He plays the protagonist, Terry Richmond, a cop. The story begins in the aftermath of Richmond’s departure from the Marines. The character lives life as it comes to serving at a Chinese food joint in Shelby Springs.
Since leaving his unity, Richmond keeps things down low and has normal experiences without interfering with anybody’s business. One day, he learns of his cousin Mikey’s arrest and rushes to get him bailed with the money he earned. On his way to the prison, Richmond gets stopped by cops while on his bike.
Richmond stays calm throughout their interaction, although the cops forcefully take the bail money. Things quickly escalate since he’s now facing opposing forces of corruption from the authorities meant to protect him.
