Is Prime Video's Picture This based on a book? Details explored
Picture This is derived from the rom-com Five Blind Dates, which was released in 2024. Directed by Shawn Sheet, Five Blind Dates follows the plot of Lia, who runs an artisanal tea store in Sydney, and the shop is at its lowest point.
However, upon a chance encounter with a divine forecaster at her sister's wedding, Lia receives a life prediction that within the next five dates that she goes with, she shall find her true love. Her family follows up accordingly, but nothing really materializes.
But the return of her childhood best friend Richard changes everything. She meets him at her sister's wedding, and during the course of the story, their relationship evolves.
Five Blind Dates stars Shuang Hu in the role of Lia, along with Yoson An as Richard. The film also stars Tiffany Wong, Ilai Swindells, Tzi Ma, Renee Lim, Rob Collins, and many others.
How is Picture This different from Five Blind Dates?
Although the storylines of both films are similar, there are some crucial differences between the stories of Picture This and Five Blind Dates.
Firstly, let us address the similarities. Both the lead characters are at a stage in their lives where they are navigating their career as well as their love life. Their storylines are similar too, as their families urge them to meet potential dates to find the one true love after the fortune-teller's advice.
Interestingly, both the lead characters' names are also rhyming, if not the same ('Lia' in Five Blind Dates and 'Pia' in Picture This).
However, the core differences between both films include the relationship of the protagonists with their main romantic interests. In the case of Five Blind Dates, Richard and Lia are long-lost childhood buddies who reconcile after years and later develop into something deeper. Whereas in Picture This, Pia and Charlie are ex-lovers who again cross their paths with each other.
There is a difference in the cultural setting, too. Picture This is based in an Asian-British community, and the story of Five Blind Dates is located within an Asian-Australian society.
Also, the career choices of both lead women are also different. Pia in Picture This works as a photographer, whereas Lia in Five Blind Dates works as a business entrepreneur.
Albeit of the differences between the stories, the main crux of both the stories is of an independent, strong woman who is finding and building herself on her own, irrespective of societal norms.
