The movie continues its journey from the events of Moana in the fictional expansive world of Polynesian mythology on the island of Motunui. The movie shows a grown-up Moana Waialiki who is now the chief and protector of her tribe. Set 3 years after the events of Moana, the movie ventures into the challenges set for our titular character beyond the familiar waters of Motunui.

Moana is alerted by a new threat, guided once more by the ocean’s mysterious call, and journeys through new islands, encountering various mythological beings. Accompanying her on this journey are Maui, the shape-shifting demigod, and Loto, a member of Moana’s wayfinding crew among many others. Jemaine Clement is not a part of Moana 2. The character was credited for providing his voice for Tamatoa, a giant, villainous, treasure-hoarding coconut crab from Lalotai. His character was introduced in the first movie where Maui, along with Moana traveled to Lalotai, the realm of monsters and mythical beings to retrieve the demi-god’s magic fish hook and the magical pearl which made its way to Tamatoa. Being briefly introduced in the series, it was understood that Tamatoa had bad blood with the Demi-god and wanted to finish him off for his past deeds.

Known for his flamboyant, treasure-hoarding nature, Tamatoa was shown a coconut crab whose shell had gold and other reflective objects stuck to it, giving him quite a shiny exterior. He is quite attracted to shiny objects, which was seen when he saw the ancient pearl’s green shine and got attracted to it. His sarcastic personality and over-the-top performance were both highlighted through the song "Shiny," providing a humorous touch to the movie.
