James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe has chosen Jason Momoa to play the popular character of Lobo. He previously played Aquaman in the Zack Snyder-established DCU. Jason Momoa's Lobo will make his big-screen debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The reaction to this casting has been unanimously positive as the actor looks a lot like Lobo in real life. Jason Momoa has expressed his love for the character for more than a decade and was campaigning to play the role before he was cast to play Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But looks like got his wish a decade later. He celebrated the Lobo casting on Instagram with the caption:

"They called"

Who is Lobo? The new Jason Momoa character explained

Lobo is a bounty hunter who belongs to the Czarnian species in the DC comics lore. Ever since, his first appearance in 1983, Lobo is a character that has fought almost every hero across the DC Universe. This pale-white-skinned character wears a leather jacket, and blue jeans, and rides on a motorcycle that flies. No wonder fans and Jason Momoa himself have been wondering to play Lobo for a while.

Artist Keith Giffen and writer Roger Slifer created this irreverent and violent Czarnian who had wiped out life in Czarnia. Lobo is invulnerable and possesses regenerative powers and superhuman strength. This thing allows Lobo a formidable opponent for Superman and other DC heroes. However, he has also worked with the Justice League every now and then.

Jason Momoa's past as Aquaman explained

Before experiencing Jason Momoa's Lobo it makes sense to look at his character from the now-defunct DC Extended Universe or DCEU. It was in October 2014, when it was officially confirmed that Jason Momoa was the new Aquaman and that he would have a role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, the details for the first solo Aquaman flick remained unconfirmed.

It was only a year later that James Wan was announced as the director of the solo-Aquaman movie that was set after the events of the Justice League movie. While his appearances in Batman v Superman and Justice League were not that popular, perception changed as the first Aquaman movie was released in December 2018. Aquaman was the first and the last billion-dollar DCEU movie.

Later, the actor reprised his role as Arthur Curry in Zack Snyder's Justice League, Peacemaker Season 1, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, none of those appearances matched the success of the first Aquaman movie. Momoa's future with DC looked questionable when James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the two CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios.

However, his current return to the DC Universe was already foreshadowed by Jason Momoa himself with a cryptic video. In that video, the actor said that he had exciting news about his involvement with DC after a meeting with Gunn and Safran. However, it was probably not confirmed a year ago because the script of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow wasn't finalized and approved yet.

Gunn has repeatedly insisted that no DC Universe movie will begin its shooting until the script is great. This is why fans are hopeful about the future of this franchise because for now, it looks like Gunn and Safran are making the right moves.

Momoa's Lobo makes his first appearance in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will be released in 2026. The movie stars House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock as the titular character, and it supposedly begins shooting in January 2025.
