Black Sheep was a cult horror-comedy film from New Zealand that was released to widely positive reviews in 2006. After eighteen long years, WTFilms has announced a sequel to Black Sheep that is believed to bring together the original director-actor duo of Jonathan King and Nathan Meister.
Black Sheep was a runaway hit despite being a relatively low-budget film. It skillfully combined terrifying horror elements with remarkably timed comedy and gags.
Black Sheep featured a unique storyline in which otherwise harmless sheep were turned into bloodthirsty fiends on a killing rampage. Nathan Meister played the character of Henry Oldfield, who has a quirky sheep-phobia.
Henry Oldfield relocates to his home to face up and put an end to his fear, but things quickly go downhill. Henry's brother is involved in a twisted scientific experiment that gives birth to bloodthirsty hordes of sheep!
Although the exact release date for the sequel is yet to be declared, fans of the cult film can expect the sequel to arrive sometime in late 2025, with production set to commence in the spring of 2025. Here's everything we know about the horror sequel!
What's the latest buzz around Black Sheep 2?
The official synopsis for Black Sheep 2, released by WTFilms, reads:
"a young scientist who is convinced that a dangerous new pathogen threatens the population and tracks it back to her hometown – which is located in the shadow of the remote sheep station where the macabre events of the original Black Sheep unfolded."
Alongside Nathan Meister, several other returning cast members will make an appearance. King and Grainer have taken up the film's production with James Partridge and Samantha Braun of Terror-Fi Films.
Richard Fletcher of Libertine Pictures, Philippa Campbell, Ari Harrison, and Jasmin McSweeney from Umbrella Entertainment will serve as executive producers on the film. Matthew Grainger and Rosie Howells, in collaboration with director Jonathan King, have written the screenplay.
One of the remarkable features of the original film was the cutting-edge VFX, which was astonishingly ahead of its time and which has still not lost its relevance to this date despite CGI improving by leaps and bounds. Weta Workshop, the award-winning SFX company led by Richard Taylor, was behind the original film and has renewed his role for the sequel.
Production for the sequel will begin next year in New Zealand. Around the same time, WTFilms will launch worldwide sales for the film and anticipates widespread response owing to the success of the first film.
Black Sheep 2 plot possibilities explored
The plot details haven't yet been announced, but speculation is rife among fans. It can be guessed that the sequel will pick up where the original film left off. By the end of Black Sheep, Henry helps to find and circulate a cure for the killer sheep brought to life by his brother Angus.
The sheep menace is solved for the time, and the infected livestock are liquidated, only to find out later that the family sheepdog has contracted the virus. The sequel might proceed with this detail for the second coming of the virus. Who knows what deadly form it might take this time?
