The Life List revolves around Alex Rose (played by Sofia Carson), who has just lost her mother, Elizabeth (Connie Britton).

Elizabeth has left a list of life goals for Alex that she needs to complete to get the inheritance. The list was prepared when Alex was just 13. Elizabeth suffers from cancer and has limited time, and she realizes that her daughter has given up on everything in life.

As the film progresses, Alex manages to check every box on the list. She manages to find love, too, eventually. The list includes things like making peace with her father, doing standup comedy, and getting a tattoo, among others. She manages to do all these things that bring meaning to her life.

In an official statement to Netflix, Connie Britton, who plays Elizabeth, said:

“As her mom, I was seeing that she’s doing fine, but I know what she has the potential to be. I also know the traumas that she’s been through, the setbacks that have held her back. So I liked the complexity of that — that it wasn’t just that she’s a disaster and we have to get her fixed up by New Year’s. It helped to understand that I was speaking to something that I recognize in her that maybe nobody else could see like her mother [could].”

While Alex's first love is Finn, it takes a while for her to realize that Brad is the right guy for her. The two end up together.
