A Minecraft Movie has possibly defied all expectations and has done well at the box office. Made on a budget of $150 million, the film has $550 million at the box office globally. It has comfortably become the second-highest-grosser of this year so far.
This Jared Hess-directed adventure comedy film taps into the nostalgia and fan following of the original video game, Minecraft. It has Jack Black playing the role of Steve a former doorknob salesman turned crafter. The film has given him two box-office records of his career and I'm really thrilled by it. So let us find out more about these records.
A Minecraft Movie gives two box-office records in Jack Black's name
Jack Black starrer A Minecraft Movie has turned into a financial milestone for the actor's career. He has been active in the industry for several years and has now two box-office records. Its opening collection was $162.7 million at the domestic box office.
Meanwhile, films led by Black have collected around $5 billion at the box office. This number was boosted by the above-mentioned opening day collection of the film—Jack has another record attached to his name.
A Minecraft Movie is now the second highest-grossing video game-inspired film ever. It is also the highest-grossing video game adaptation in the live-action space. The first one is The Super Mario Bros. Movie which debuted in 2023 (Jack voiced the character named Bowser). As a result, he has achieved the interesting feat of starring in both animated and live-action video game adaptations.
If the film continues to perform at this pace at the box office, it may break the record of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Jack Black who has been acting since the mid-90s, has starred in several comedy films over the years including Tropic Thunder, Kung Fu Panda, Jumanji, etc. He has also taken on dramatic and supporting roles in titles like The Cable Guy and Enemy of the State. In recent years, Jack has consistently appeared or voiced for a role in comedy films.
A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess and written by Chris Bowman, Gavin James, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, and Chris Galletta along with Allison Schroeder. In a The Hollywood Reporter interview on March 30, Black said that the world needs a film like this:
“What the world needs now is love, sweet love. We’ve got to work together, my God. There’s so much violence and war and hatred. And that’s what I love about this movie — there’s a lot of love in it and there’s a lot of creativity. There is some anger and violence too, but in the end it’s about friendship and working together to make [the world] a better place,” he stated.
His co-star, Jason Momoa, added:
“I think everyone needs to escape a little bit right now. It’s nice to sit back and have a really fun adventure and giggle and laugh."
