Father John Misty released his album, Mahashmashana, on November 22, 2024. On the same day, Kendrick Lamar dropped his surprise album, GNX. Now Misty has come forward to react to the coincidence, joking about it in an X page post on November 22, 2024:
"not now I’m furiously scribbling my seeming response to"
The singer went on to respond to a fan saying that they were sorry that he had dropped his album, saying that the same thing had happened before as well and it was okay:
"it’s okay only other times it’s happened was 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2022"
While the other times have been on separate dates, this time the albums were released on the same date. Father John Misty also responded to the coincidence by releasing a new song titled God's Trash.
More on Father John Misty's new album

Father John Misty elaborated on the album in an exclusive Blackbird Spyplane interview released on October 22, 2024:
“There’s an actor in every one of us. The actor is part of naked reality, and we don’t really know what that looks like. But maybe we have some kind of inkling that we are, in our truest form, an undifferentiated part of a non-localized consciousness, and that maybe God is a curious God who is dying to have this extremely poignant experience of being a Josh Tillman-"
Father John Misty continued:
"- or being a Jonah. The song ‘Mahashmashana’ is definitely written from a dream-logic place, but in the end it’s, like, ‘Yeah, maybe there’s reason to believe that the real truth of our experience is non-human — but the flesh wins every time. The body wins. It’s just too vivid. The hallucination is too strong.’”
The singer later talked about collaborating with Joe Roberts, a.k.a. LSD Worldpeace, on the cover of the album:
“I’m sure when you dive into the quark level of existence, you just get little smiley faces. That’s what they’re doing at the Hadron collider, sending little smiley faces back and forth. Joe’s the sweetest guy. There’s a folk-art feel to his stuff. The first thing I saw of his was a Ninja Turtles drawing, which bonged me right in the archetypal center -"
The singer continued:
"-because when I was a kid. I wanted to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. So I dove in from there, and yeah, for the cover, I commissioned him to do some collages, and they’re great, but he also sent along some doodles. ..He said it was the first thing he drew, but there’s this red splotch on there and he almost didn’t send it because of that. And that became the cover.”
Father John Misty is currently set to tour across North America from February 12, 2025, to March 1, 2025, performing across the US and Canada.
