If you're obsessed with Pedro Pascal's The Last of Us, there's another post-apocalyptic project on the way. I Am Legend 2 is officially in the plans, according to the recent comments from Will Smith. The 56-year-old actor was the lone star of the first film that was released back in 2007. It showed him as one of the few living survivors of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly 90% of the human population. So, he used his knowledge as a virologist to find a cure.

Now, almost two decades after its release, a sequel is on its way. That might be surprising for the fans who saw the theatrical version of the film and did not catch up on its alternate ending. For the uninitiated, the film was made with two different endings in mind. The first one is where Will Smith's character dies in the end during his fight with another mutated species called Darkseekers, while the second one shows him prevailing in the fight and heading to a survivor's camp.

The second ending was more faithful to Richard Matheson's eponymous novel and offered a different interpretation of why Will Smith's character is a legend than the theatrical reason. He was not a legend because he sacrificed himself for humans, but because he acknowledged the new order of the world and decided to find a balance with the new dominant species. Some reports say that the ending where Smith's character was abandoned was cut since it received poor responses during the test screenings.

Since I Am Legend 2 is on its way, it is most likely restoring this plot point from the novel. In addition to this, a few more details have resurfaced online, including a cast member and his role.

Will Smith's I Am Legend was supposed to get a prequel over a decade ago, but that plan was reportedly shelved at the time. The new sequel seems intriguing for a number of reasons, and it doesn't have to do just with Smith's character. As it turns out, Michael B. Jordan is set to join him in this anticipated project. The Black Panther and Creed star, who is currently enjoying rave reviews for Ryan Coogler's Sinners, will star alongside Smith in this sequel.

You might ask: What role does Michael B. Jordan play in I Am Legend 2? Well, Will Smith shed light on this topic during his appearance on the Drink Champs podcast from REVOLT. He said,

"What we were gonna do was the prequel, so we were gonna do the prequel. … And [Akiva Goldsman] was like, but wait, what if we make a new version from the alternate ending, where your character is still alive and you know, Michael B. Jordan’s character currently is the head of a new settlement... He’s not my son... So there’s a settlement in Connecticut [in I Am Legend 2]."

Based on Will Smith's comments, Michael B. Jordan might lead a new settlement in I Am Legend 2. It means Will Smith's character might have traveled to Connecticut after joining Anna (Alice Braga) in the survivors' colony in Vermont. They might join hands to understand their place in the new world, where humans are not the dominant species anymore.
