The real-life Alyssa was 15 when she met 20-year-old Steven in 1995. She ran away from her family to live with him in New York and welcomed their first daughter at the age of 17. They named the baby girl Denise, but Steven soon started physically abusing the child by pinching and nearly suffocating her.

As in the film, Alyssa put Denise up for adoption, who returned to her life as an adult named Katie. Following a relationship with Steven, Katie got married to him in July 2017 and gave birth to their child Bennett two months later.

The two were arrested over incest charges in January 2018 but released on bond later. Katie then told Steven that she did not want to keep in touch with him. What followed was a gruesome act by Steven that no one had seen coming.
