What is the plot of Hurry Up Tomorrow?
Hurry Up Tomorrow revolves around The Weeknd playing a fictional version of himself as a musician. He is suffering from insomnia and is on the cusp of going through a mental breakdown. The musician eventually encounters a stranger who takes him on a journey.
In a Fandango interview, The Weeknd revealed that the film came first before the album. He said:
“The film came first. The album didn’t exist. We were scoring and writing music to picture. The idea came from a real-life incident that had happened and I always saw it as a film. The film came first, then the music.”
In a separate Empire interview, the film's director, Trey Edward Shults, called it Raging Bull meets Purple Rain.
“It’s kinda like Raging Bull and Persona meets Purple Rain. I think it was a test. What happens if this thing that you’re relying on too much is taken away from you?” It not only helped inspire Hurry Up Tomorrow, but marked a turning point in his entire conception of ‘The Weeknd’. “I think that I needed that experience, on the biggest stage of my career, because that way I couldn’t ignore it."
He further spoke about the main protagonist.
“The main character’s name is Abel. It’s very much implied that this is The Weeknd but the Abel you see in the movie is not the Abel I know personally. It’s drawing on personal things that he’s wrestled with his entire life, imagining if he’d surrounded himself with the wrong people and made some wrong choices.”
