What’s Hurry Up Tomorrow all about?

Lionsgate and The Weeknd are keeping the plot under wraps. But here’s what we do know: Hurry Up Tomorrow will be a psychological thriller based on The Weeknd’s upcoming album of the same name. It is also the final part of his recent album trilogy.

It is directed by Trey Edward Shults, who is known for films like Waves and It Comes at Night. The movie is expected to follow the intense, haunting vibe of The Weeknd’s music and recent visuals.

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, not only stars in it but has also co-written the screenplay with Shults and Reza Fahim.

Fahim produced the film alongside Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss. As for the storyline, it’s still unknown, but if we’re to take The Weeknd’s music into account, it is going to touch deeply upon existential and self-reflective themes.

If the album singles Dancing in the Flames, Timeless with Playboi Carti, and São Paulo with Anitta are any clues, this film could blend reality and surrealism in some eye-popping ways.

Who’s involved in Hurry Up Tomorrow?

The cast alone makes Hurry Up Tomorrow a must-watch.

Alongside The Weeknd, the film stars Wednesday's Jenna Ortega and The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan. Ortega and Keoghan are seasoned pros when it comes to psychological thrillers. Their characters are sure to bring an eerie, intense dynamic to the film.

Besides Shults’ direction, the film features an original score by The Weeknd and Daniel Lopatin, who is known for scoring the stress-filled Uncut Gems, in which The Weeknd had a cameo.

The Idol's Reza Fahim is The Weeknd’s creative partner. He brings his expertise as a co-writer and producer, alongside producers Turen, Kreiss, and Tesfaye himself.

The production design team includes Chayse Irvin as the director of photography, Elliott Hostetter on production design, and costume designers, Erin Benach and Hannah Jacobs.

When will Hurry Up Tomorrow be released?

Originally, 2024 was mentioned as the potential release year, but given the secrecy around the project and with 2024 winding down, it could well be pushed to 2025.

Lionsgate has secured worldwide distribution rights and teased an “imminent release date.”

The deal with Lionsgate was confirmed by the chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Adam Fogelson, in a statement to Deadline:

“Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium… With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”

Why fans can’t wait for Hurry Up Tomorrow

The Weeknd’s past few years have shown his range not only as a musician but also as a visual artist and actor. He recently starred in The Idol which received mixed reviews. However, it demonstrated his potential as a leading man. Fans are hoping that this new film builds on that promise.

Plus, with Hurry Up Tomorrow tying into his album, it’s more than just a film. This final chapter has been built up through countless teasers.

There are also visually stunning music videos. For fans, this film is the culmination of an epic musical journey that began with After Hours.

With Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan on board and Trey Edward Shults directing, this Lionsgate-backed psychological thriller is one of the most anticipated films on the horizon.
