September 5 had its first screening at the 81st Venice International Film Festival back in August, 2024. Besides being on the 2025 Academy Awards nomination list, the movie also bagged some recognition at the 82nd Golden Globes' nominee announcement.

September 5 sets up the right tone for a sports-centric drama studded with elements of thrill and action. The premise of the film is set in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, which will be remembered in history as the epicenter of a deadly hostage situation involving 11 Israeli athletes (by Palestine's militant group named Black September).

The plot culminates as the iconic news executive cum ABC Sports' president Roone Pinckney Arledge Jr. (portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard) takes the lead. Joining him is a young and ambitious news reporter, Geoffrey Mason (heading the Munich control room—played by John Magaro). He finds himself in a difficult situation where he has to cover the live events of the terrorist development with the most neutral approach possible.

The socio-political involvement and nuances of a big game like the Olympics altogether put the reporters in a position where their portrayal of a national crisis might leave behind critical consequences. Moral and ethical concerns also start playing a crucial role in a hostage situation of such magnitude—especially after German authorities intervene in the development.

However, the events sadly conclude on a tragic note as all the Israeli hostages eventually end up dead in a failed attempt at extraction. September 5 contains original footage of events from 1972—a sheer work of dedication in terms of research. Moritz Binder has worked as a screenwriter for the project alongside helmer Tim Fehlbaum—Alex David was also a part of the creative team.
