What is the plot of A Real Pain?
A Real Pain revolves around David Kaplan and Benjamin Kaplan who are cousins going on a heritage tour to Poland. The two plan to visit their grandmother's house to honor their family's Jewish history. The entire story revolves around their dynamic emerging from their distinct personalities.
The script is written by Jesse Eisenberg while the producers of the film include Eisenberg, Dave McCary, Ewa Puszczyńska, Jennifer Semler, Ali Herting, Emma Stone, and Jennifer Stemler.
Speaking to Esquire, Jesse Eisenberg spoke about how his real-life aunt inspired the character of grandmother in the film. He said,
"The character of our grandmother is based on my Aunt Doris. She was born and raised in Poland, was such an unusual person and gave me such grounding in my life. She died at 101 and while the film is fictional, it has many personal, autobiographical elements that came out, like my aunt and even filming at the home my family lived in in Poland."
Keiran Culkin also revealed why he agreed to do the film. He also called the script brilliant and funny.
"I hate saying this in front of (Jesse), but the man wrote a brilliant script. It was funny, full and detailed. I had no questions or notes, and I didn’t have to think about how I would fit into the part. That never happens. So much so that I read it once, we had a conversation, I said yes. I re-read it a year later and said, “put me on the set now”. On set, I remember he came up to during the final shot and asked if I wanted to talk about the scene and I said “no, go away.”
A Real Pain can be enjoyed on both Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ pack. Are you excited to watch the film?
