Scarlett Johansson and her husband Colin Jost’s relationship has been brought to the spotlight following the Saturday Night Live host’s jokes during the “Weekend Update: Christmas joke swap” segment.
The season’s finale episode which aired on December 21 featured co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che, as the duo participated in the show’s biannual tradition. In the episode, they were made to read jokes – none of them expect coming. During the show, Colin made some surprising jokes about his wife, Scarlett Johansson which left her visibly shocked.
In one of the jokes, Jost quipped about leaving his wife suggesting that she recently celebrated her 40th birthday.
"I want to dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson," he read. "Hey, boo. Y'all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means I'm about to get up out of there!" The camera which captured her reactions showed her laughing nervously.
For those who are unaware, it was the set of Saturday Night Live, where Scarlett Johansson met her “boo” Colin Jost for the first time in 2006. At the time, Johansson was hosting the show while Jost was a new writer.
We take a deep dive into their love story which follows their first encounter to their current relationship status.
Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost’s relationship timeline
From their first meet in 2006 till 2024, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost’s relationship has been going strong. The couple reportedly continues to thrive as they complete their four years of marriage.
2006
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight Jost said that he had the first encounter with his wife when she hosted Saturday Night Live in January 2006.
“The first time she hosted was the first year I was a writer on the show,” he claimed. “So, we’ve kind of known each other since then…she’s the best.”
Detailing his encounter in his 2020 memoir, A Very Punchable Face, Jost pens, "She has just turned 20, and I was 23, but in terms of status and maturing she was here [holds hand above head] and I was here [holds hand one-inch off ground]." He continued, "She claims that she remembers thinking I was 'cute,' but I know what I looked like and that's not the word I would have used. ('Shaggy' would have been generous. 'Slovenly,' more accurate)."
On the other, Johansson reportedly considers 2010 when she first noticed Jost. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Black Widow actress reflected on her first meet-cute with her husband, “It was some dumb parody that he had written, and he was in there partly directing this segment we had to do,” she said. “That’s my first memory of him. He seemed very confident at the time. I don’t know if he felt that way, but in that environment, if you’re not confident as a writer, your stuff just never gets produced.”
2017
However, it was not until May 2017 that the couple sparked rumors of being romantically involved, a report in The Knot stated. Reports stated that they were spotted on several outings and on the sets of the SNL season finale hugging each other.
Another report stated that Colin Jost confirmed his relationship with Johannson during a red-carpet appearance at the Emmy Awards in September 2017. "She's pretty cool … it's hard to have a lot of complaints, she's pretty awesome," he told Entertainment Tonight.
