The title Dear Santa has appeared in various media forms, primarily as holiday-themed movies but also in music. There are three films released before the one coming this tear.

  1. Dear Santa (1998) – This film is a drama full of sentiment, is less known and more warmly touched.
  2. Dear Santa (2005) – Another interpretation of the theme, though not much is known about its plot or success.
  3. Dear Santa (2011) – Perhaps the most famous prequel, it's a Hallmark-style romantic comedy about an heiress whose life is turned upside down when she reads a note from a child to Santa Claus, which inspires her to do good deeds during the holiday season.

The 2024 release features Jack Black as a devilish version of Santa. This brings comedic and fantasy facets to this franchise's name.

What is the 2024 Dear Santa movie about?

The movie starts with Liam mistaking his Christmas addressee for "Satan" with a simple spelling error. The mistake sets off unexpected events as Jack Black plays a character clearly in the gray line between Satan and Santa, descending on the family's holiday as they leap into crazy consequences.

The script by Ricky Blitt, Peter Farrelly, and Dan Ewen brings holiday mischief with slapstick humor with a playful twist on the classic Christmas magic. The Farrelly Brothers, who primarily make edgy comedies reunite with Black after they last worked with the latter in the early 2000s.

According to a Deadline report, this new holiday comedy,

“Takes familiar Christmas tropes and flips them on their head with humor and warmth.”

Cast and crew of Dear Santa (2024)

Jack Black leads this list of stars in the 2024 version as dual-natured Satan/Santa. Keegan-Michael Key features alongside him as Liam's therapist, bringing comedy and intensity. Another featured cast member will be Jason Alexander, with dual roles (both Hades and "Jack Frost") frying in a pot of mythological and wintery chaos.

Supporting actors round out the list, including young hero Liam, Robert Timothy Smith, his mother Molly Turner, Brianne Howey, Bill Turner, Hayes MacArthur, and musician Post Malone in a cameo as himself. P.J. Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker, and Kai Cech make it sure to be an entertaining mix of talents that brings family-friendly characters together with plenty of humor.

The Farrelly Brothers are collaborating with Black in a production that promises to recapture the comedic energy brought by the duo, along with Alexander, in Shallow Hal (2001). Filming of the movie began in 2023 in Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia. The latter was designed to become a festive winter wonderland and was added as part of the visual feasts of Christmas decor for the audience.
