Netflix's Cinematic Christmas Universe has been extended thanks to its latest addition Hot Frosty. It's a Christmas romantic comedy film starring Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan.
The 2017 film Christmas Inheritance is the starting point of Netflix's venture into the shared cinematic universe. A number of films have been released after that and viewers have witnessed several cameos of pre-established characters as well as easter eggs.
The recent holiday spin-off Hot Frosty (2024) has references from the 2022 film. Other movies like Mean Girls (2004) and Single All The Way (2021) have also reportedly been chosen to contribute towards easter eggs in the newest holiday rom-com Hot Frosty.
How is Hot Frosty connected to Falling For Christmas?
According to reports, Hot Frosty does not exist in the same world as that of Falling For Christmas. The explanation to this lies in the fact that Hot Frosty has references from the 2017 Netflix film A Christmas Prince.
In one of the sequences, Kathy (played by Lacey Chabert) takes the magical snowman turned real man, Jack, to the doctor. After the doctor confrims that he is a snowman who came to life, Kathy says in surprise, "Sure. Right. And I'm the queen of Aldovia."
As viewers have seen, Aldovia is a fictional country shown in the Christmas Prince franchise. Moreover, in Falling For Christmas and several other Netflix movies, the characters involved witness scenes of the Chritmas Prince on televison screens.
This means that Hot Frosty and Christmas Prince movies co-exist in the same world. It further implies that within Netflix's Christmas Universe, Falling For Christmas is from a separate world parallel to what we see in A Christmas Prince or Hot Frosty.
Netflix reportedly uses the reference scenes for promoting other films. There is no continuity maintained within the universe.
What are the other movie references seen in Hot Frosty?
It is further important to address the Mean Girls (2004) references in Christmas romantic drama Hot Frosty. Lacey Chabert had played the role of high school gossiper Gretchen Wieners in the 2004 classic.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan, who played Cady Heron further puts Falling For Christmas into perspective as well (as Lohan played the part of Sierra Belmont). So, Lohan's cameo in Hot Frosty makes sense.
Moreover, there is a scene in Hot Frosty where Kathy (Lacy Chabert) teachers her living snowman how to operate the TV. When she turns it on, viewers see a scene from the movie Falling For Christmas where Sierra (played by Lindsay Lohan) wakes up from a coma.
Kathy says," That is so funny. That looks like a girl I went to high school with." While it seems like a throwaway joke (referencing Mean Girls), it could also mean that in her world Kathy went to high school with a different version of Sierra.
There have been smaller references like the one we see related to Single All The Way (2021). In one sequence of Hot Frosty, viewers reportedly see a scene from the 2021 movie playing in a TV in the background where Aunty Sady (played by Jennifer Coolidge) performs her part in a nativity play.
