The Hugh Grant starrer Heretic has been loved by people, ever since its release on 8th November 2024. The film is also joined by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East.
This Scott Beck directorial follows the plot of two sisters Paxton and Barnes, who are involved with the missionary and are set to educate more people about their faith. Unbeknownst to them, their lives are endangered upon meeting a seemingly kind man named Mr. Reed.
Heretic deals with themes involving faith, belief, violence and philosophy with much nuance and depth. The film's soundscape has been created meticulously to bring a complete sense of its storytelling.
The soundtrack has brought an intense impact into its narrative, atmosphere, and the characters' emotions in the storyline.
Let us dig deeper into it and discover the soundtracks of the film Heretic.
Heretic soundtrack list: A guide to every song featured in the horror film
The musical score of Heretic is created by the Emmy-nominated music composer Chris Bacon.
His previous works in films and series include Smash (2012-2013), Bates Motel (2013-2017), The Tick (2016-2019), Wednesday (2022-present), 65 (2023), to name a few.
Along with the soundtracks that Chris Bacon composed, some famous songs from different artistes such as The Hollies and Ipana Troubadours have been featured in the film.
Interestingly, songs of iconic musicians, namely Bob Dylan and the band Radiohead, sung by none other than the lead cast themselves, Sophie Thatcher and Hugh Grant, have also been added to the mix.
Here's the list of the songs featured in the movie Heretic:
- Creep by Radiohead (Singer: Hugh Grant)
- Just Like a Butterfly (That’s Caught in the Rain) by Ipana Troubadours
- Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan (Singer: Sophie Thatcher)
- The Air That I Breathe by The Hollies
In the movie, when the sister duo enter Mr. Reed's house and his trap encloses in, Mr. Reed plays The Hollies' song The Air That I Breathe. As the close credits roll, we hear the Bob Dylan number Knockin' on Heaven's Door in Sophie Thatcher's voice.
About Hugh Grant lending his singing voice in the film, he speaks to NME about how he feels about it. He states:
“I don’t do it very well. I think it’s a very difficult song to sing. I researched it a bit and they kind of hate it. One of them sketched it off, they recorded it and they never really bothered to put on proper lyrics [that] they liked. Everyone went mad for it and called for it at every Radiohead concert. Very difficult to sing. I didn’t crack that one.”
In one of Chris Bacon's Instagram posts, the composer sheds light on his connection with the film Heretic. His journey with faith as well as a musician must have played a huge part in the making of the tracks.
In an excerpt from Bacon's post, he states:
"@A24's Heretic opens this week. As many know, I grew up Mormon (not the official name of The Church, but I use it here for simplicity) and it has been hugely foundational in my life. I served a mission. I served in leadership roles. And while there are aspects of The Church with which I don't resonate, I continue to play piano for the children's Sunday School organization. All of that is to say, this movie is hugely personal for me and I know there are more than a few people concerned about what its message and intention might be..."
