Josh Ruben's latest rom-com, Slasher, falls just short of being called Heart Eyes Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, only if the former had been revealed as the face behind that mask. But he isn't.

The film stars Cloak & Dagger's Olivia Holt and Love, Victor's Mason Gooding in the leading roles of Ally and Jay, respectively. While the pair isn't exactly made in heaven, they eventually become one as they navigate a series of bizarre events leading upto Valentine's Day.

Both of them are confronted by a Cupid whose arrows doesn't really serve as a means to spark love among couples. Later, it is revealed that there isn't one but three of them—one being just a fanboy of the original duo.

Love is in the air, and so is the blood splatter in this fun slasher, but the ultimate reveal takes the thrill to another level. So let's take a closer look at the real faces behind the lovely mask.

Spoilers from Heart Eyes will follow

Love eventually sparks between Jay and Ally, and once she realizes it, she goes after him, only to find that he has already left for the airport. However, she doesn't find him there–instead, the Heart Eyes killers do, and they've found Jay before she did. They give her an address where they are keeping him and ask her to join them.

When she arrives, it is revealed that Detective Jeanette Shaw (Jordana Brewster) and an IT worker at the police department named David—who also happens to be Shaw’s husband—are the primary killers, alongside a fanboy they recruited. Ally and Jay kill this fanboy early on while defending themselves.

When we think about it, this is actually a romantic film in its own twisted way. David and Jeanette are just celebrating Valentine's Day in their own way—they bonded over their shared love for murder and never looked back. Other than that, they are simply law enforcement officers serving the public. Romantic, isn’t it?

Heart Eyes couple gets the perfect Valentine's Day present

Now, everyone is in the same place—a room full of people and a gun, which the killers demand Ally use—either on herself or Jay. She does neither. Instead, she shoots Shaw, and a scuffle follows.

However, this time, Jay and Ally manage to overpower the Heart Eyes killers. Shaw ends up decapitated on a St. Valentine’s statue, while the other Cupid gets a love arrow to the face—courtesy of Jay.

Does that set up a Heart Eyes sequel?

Everything returns to normal—Ally and Jay are taking the next step in their relationship, and there seem to be no more killings in the city. Interestingly, this experience has seemingly helped Ally overcome her hemophobia, as she is back in med school.

But in an unexpected twist, during the mid-credits scene, she receives a call. The voice on the other end sounds eerily similar to the distorted tone used by the killers. However, it turns out to be a friend playing a prank on her—or is it?

There’s no sequel announced yet, but the mid-credits scene leaves room for the story to develop further if the creators choose to continue it. This could mark the beginning of another horror franchise, as the film has proven that its concept has the potential for success.
