Gone Girl ending explained: Did Nick kill Amy?

By the ending of Gone Girl, we witness the fact that Nick did not kill Amy. In fact, Amy did not die either. It is revealed that the whole supposed 'murder' of Amy was all orchestrated by Amy herself.

Amy is a public figure in the film, and hence, her 'murder' has received a lot of tabloid attention. Before her 'death,' she journaled about her feelings of panic and fears of losing her life in the hands of Nick. When police come across this, their suspicion towards Nick arises.

It is also revealed that Amy is pregnant, something that Nick was completely unaware of. However, Nick elucidates to his sister Margo that his hands are clean. Nick also digs deeper into Amy's past, where he comes in contact with her two former partners.

Amy has had a history of falsifying and manipulating her partners for her own gain. Amongst her former lovers, she has put a false case of r*pe on Tommy O'Hara, as well as fake stalking charges against Desi Collings.

However, after escaping due to her staged murder, Amy was in hiding. However, after experiencing a robbing incident, she approaches her ex Desi to provide her a hiding place. She manipulates him by saying that Nick is abusive, and hence she fled the house.

At the same time, Nick has approached the media with a scheming plan. With his devious media interactions, he has managed to achieve the public's sympathy. But soon, Nick and Margo get arrested and later get freed too.

But Amy experiences a change of heart after watching Nick's interview. In order to get back with Nick, she hatches a new plan where she frames Desi for abduction and r*pe. She ends up killing Desi.

She manipulates the police about her 'innocence' and returns back to Nick. Her supposed pregnancy was false as well.

However, towards the end, it is revealed in the end that Amy is actually pregnant. She has been artificially implanted with Nick's samples, post the whole 'murder' fiasco.

What was Amy's motive in Gone Girl?

Amy's main motive was to get back at her husband. Amy felt Nick was not giving her the same amount of affection as he did before, along with him cheating on her. Amy got herself pregnant to ensure that Nick does not walk out of the marriage.

Gone Girl showcases the depths of manipulation and insanity that go on in such a deadly, destructive union. Betrayal plays a crucial theme in the film. Both Nick's and Amy's display of manipulative behavior is ought to make us question their moral fabric.

It is indeed satisfying to see such complex, flawed women characters like Amy. In fact, she does feel emancipatory in the way she exercises her agency. But here also comes the saddest part.

Despite Amy's extreme intelligence and skills, it is heartbreaking to witness a woman put everything on stake just to gain her husband's affection and return to a loveless marriage. It may seem like Amy has 'succeeded' in her goal, but has she really?

It is evident that the sole reason Nick is staying in the marriage is due to the unborn child and not because he loves Amy. Her character is reminiscent of Love Quinn from the YOU series.

It does not take a lot of brainpower to assume that this marriage shall not end well for both of them, or it is likely to be even more hazardous.
