The Marvel Cinematic Universe is yet again opening up its world with its next release in phase 5 titled - Captain America: Brave New World. It marks the official debut of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new and official Captain America.
All set to be released on Valentine's Day i.e., the 14th of February, 2025, Captain America: Brave New World is one of the films that is about the end of the 5th phase in the MCU.
Among the cast of this new Captain America film which in a way is a sequel to Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross/The Red Hulk, and Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon. In a surprising turn of events Tim Blake Nelson from Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk is reprising his role as Samuel Sterns/The Leader.
However, a cast member who also stands out in Captain America: Brave New World is Giancarlo Esposito who plays a character named Seth Voelker Sidewinder. Fans of the Marvel comics know that the character that Esposito is about to play is a leader of the Serpent Society and he vouches to bring on a fresh layer of complexity to his role as well as in the MCU.
Esposito’s Transformation into Sidewinder in Captain America: Brave New World
Known for his strong-led roles, Giancarlo Esposito has talked about a much more raw and action-packed performance in Captain America: Brave New World.
While talking about his character, Esposito opened up about the fact that he brought in some elements of Sidewinder’s comic book colors into his MCU suit, at which he may have hinted at potential future developments for his character. While giving out an interview to ABC, he says that –
"Part of the incorporation of Sidewinder's colours I brought into the costume that I'm wearing," he said. "I'm hoping that it gives them inspiration in movies to come that will allow me to take on more of that serpent persona."
Esposito also puts forth a strong emphasis on the physicality that the role demands while mentioning that his character in Captain America: Brave New World is highly experienced in combat, and he also talks about making use of weapons like knives, and firearms with also throwing around some strong definitive punches and kicks. He says that –
"You've never seen me play a character like this," he continued. "This guy knows how to use a rifle, a pistol, knives, (he's) very very physical, active with his physicality, punches, kicks, all that."
Sidewinder’s Role in the MCU and Potential Future Projects:
As a rival in Captain America: Brave New World, Sidewinder’s comic book past as the leader of the Serpent Society unlocks countless what-ifs for the character’s future in the MCU moving forward.
In the Marvel comics, The Serpent Society is a team of supervillains who are seen as having a tiff with Captain America. This alone adds a whole lot of depth to the narrative of Captain America: Brave New World.
Esposito’s rendering as Sidewinder in the MCU is likely to strengthen this character who is not so well known and common amongst the fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, while Kevin Feige has yet to pull out some concrete specifics about the future of Sidewinder in the MCU, the actor has implied things regarding his future at Marvel Studios.
Esposito has come forth with there being a slight possibility of a Disney+ series that perhaps caters to his character or could make him appear in other Disney+ shows that revolve around other Marvel characters.
Whatever the case may be, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm this stance officially.
Captain America: Brave New World is gearing up to be the latest add-on to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Anthony Mackie taking up the mantel of Captain America officially to Harrison Ford a.k.a. Thaddeus Ross turning into The Red Hulk to Joaquin Torres becoming the new Falcon to Giancarlo Esposito’s character as Sidewinder, Captain America: Brave New World is set to release in theatres all over the world on the 14th of February 2025.
