The Odyssey is the next film by Christopher Nolan and is also reportedly a much-anticipated one among his fans. The epic action fantasy film will be released by Universal Pictures on July 17, 2026. Here's the official synopsis:
Follows Odysseus in his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, showcasing his encounters with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Circe, and finishing with his reunion with his wife, Penelope.
Matt Damon is playing the role of Odysseus, who was the king of Ithaca in Greek mythology. Recently, Ben Affleck commented on Damon's transformation for the role and said,
"Matt gets in shape once in his life."
Ben Affleck talks about Matt Damon's transformation for The Odyssey
Matt Damon has undergone a physical transformation to portray King Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's forthcoming epic action fantasy film The Odyssey. His close friend and actor Ben Affleck has shared his thoughts about Damon's physique. He jokingly said:
“Matt gets in shape once in his life…”
He then added,
“No, I think it's great. What he tells me about the movie, it sounds great and spectacular, and I am looking forward to seeing it. I am impressed. It gets harder and harder, as you get on with years, to get it together and flex. So, you know, good for him.”
Matt's picture from The Odyssey's set went viral earlier this year as he was spotted shirtless with a ripped body. The film is written and directed by Christopher Nolan. He is also producing it with his wife, Emma Thomas. Based on Homer's namesake epic poem, the film follows Odysseus right after the completion of the Trojan War as he returns home to be with Penelope, his wife. Besides Damon, the film also has an interesting ensemble cast of actors. This includes,
- Anne Hathaway
- Tom Holland
- Zendaya
- Robert Pattinson
- Lupita Nyong'o
- Jon Bernthal
- Charlize Theron
- Bill Irwin
- Samantha Morton
- Himesh Patel
- Elliot Page
- Benny Safdie
- John Leguizamo
- Jesse Garcia
- Will Yun Lee
- Mia Goth
In February 2025, Damon spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and only said one line about his role in The Odyssey. He said,
"I literally have an odyssey in front of me.”
While Damon did not reveal anything about his role in The Odyssey, his comment hints that his character is quite substantial.
This is Nolan's first tryst with a mythological epic storyline. His earlier film, Oppenheimer, was a historical biographical drama on the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy portrayed the titular character. The film focused on Robert's life and the Manhattan Project that he headed during the Second World War. It met with positive critical response and grossed more than $900 million. Nolan won his first Best Director Oscar while Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. were bestowed with the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards, respectively.
Nolan is known for his big-scale filmmaking, and some of the same in a THR interview. He said,
“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is. I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them in the most productive and interesting way.”
