In an interview with Collider, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier was asked about an MCU actor who leaned heavily on their past performance, which helped their acting in this film. He said,

"I think everyone was really game to do something new, but obviously you know, when you are working with someone like Sebastian Stan and they are such an incredible actor but they've also been in so many of these movies and they are such an icon within the world you know and just in the world in general I think you know that character has processed a lot of the things that our characters have yet to process."

The director also spoke about prioritizing practical in-camera effects for the film. Citing an example of Florence Pugh jumping from the world's second-tallest building for a scene, he said,

"I mean, I think we tried to do as much as we could, obviously, you don't, I suppose you technically don't need Florence (Pugh) to step off the second-tallest building in the world. But if she wants to do that, then I would not get in her way if she decides she's going to make that happen. I think probably you know we have a..there's a lot of grounded stuff in this movie and a lot of grounded action. There is a whole surrealist side to the film, and I think that traditionally in this world, you might, you know, lean pretty hard on visual effects to do that."

Eric Pearson has written the story of Thunderbolts*, while the screenplay is by Pearson and Joanna Calo. It is the 36th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follows a bunch of antiheroes who must work together to stop an entity.

The film had its premiere at London's Cineworld Leicester Square. It will be released theatrically by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on May 2, 2025. The cast of the film includes

  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes
  • Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka U.S. Agent
  • Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov aka Taskmaster
