Fly Me to the Moon earned a lot of love from critics after its release. The way the story is woven against a real-life backdrop makes for an interesting watch. This Greg Berlanti film revolves around Kelly Jones and Cole Davis who oversee launches at NASA. The duo is working on a project to fake the Apollo 11 moon landing, just in case the real operation falters.
Fly Me to the Moon was released on July 12, 2024, by Columbia and Sony Pictures, after its premiere at Lincoln Square. Ever since the film was released, there has been much debate on the internet regarding its ending and the Artemis Project shown in the story.
Was the Artemis Project shown in Fly Me to the Moon real?
Fly Me to the Moon takes place around the time when NASA was preparing for the historic Apollo 11 Mission which marked the first instance of human beings landing on the surface of the Moon. Set in 1968, the film follows Kelly Jones (played by Scarlett Johansson) and Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) working together on a project to have a backup plan for the Apollo 11 mission.
The project is called Project Artemis and it is based on the conspiracy that claims that NASA had faked the moon landing. While the Artemis project was not real, NASA used the same name for their new mission to once again have humans on the moon.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, director Greg Berlanti stated that he had to embrace the theory surrounding the moon landing. Reflecting on NASA's stance on the event, he said:
"To look at the event of what was achieved, we have to embrace this conspiracy theory and talk about, ‘Well, how would it have been done?’” So we did not shy away from it because, ultimately, the movie is about why the truth is so important."
What is the ending of Fly Me to the Moon? Explained
Towards the end of Fly Me to the Moon, we see a black colored cat accidentally destroying the set that was built for the Artemis Project. The stray cat eventually manages to leave the building. Through these events, the makers manage to subvert the beliefs surrounding black cats as the accident proves to be good for everyone.
Because of the cat, Cole and Kelly realize that they are watching the real footage since the set has been destroyed. This compels Kelly to introspect and think about the lies she has been a part of. This realization further leads her to admit her real name, which is Winnie.
Kelly and Cole are still together in the end. We also see Moe informing her that her past, which includes her cheating on people, will be removed from the database.
The ending of Fly Me to the Moon emphasizes the importance of truth and its consequences. Kelly realized that they were cheating the public by faking such an important event. The way the film ends portrays the need for honesty in any field.
