Lynne Ramsay is returning to the big screen with Die, My Love, her first feature film in seven years. The thriller drama is based on Ariana Harwicz's 2017 novel that revolves around a woman, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is at a crossroads battling love and insanity.
Ramsay reportedly teased her upcoming thriller at the Sarajevo Film Festival, in 2023 where she mentioned the film's divergences from the original novel. She further said in a statement:
"Lawrence just really responded to the material, which is hardcore in some ways, because it’s about postnatal depression and bipolar disorder. But it’s funny as well. Well, I’ve made it funny. I think I’ve made it funny. I hope I’ve made it funny."
However, we still don't have a confirmed release date for Die, My Love. As the first look is revealed, fans eagerly wait for a teaser or the first trailer of the movie.
According to the latest reports, Enda Walsh has co-written the script alongside Ramsay. Lead star Jennifer Lawrence has produced the film along with Martin Scorsese and Justine Ciarrocchi.
The film is thus a joint venture between Excellent Cavader and Black Label Media. The official synopsis of the movie reads:
"In a remote forgotten rural area, a mother struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis."
What do we know about the plot of Die, My Love?
Die, My Love is set in a rural American background, and at the heart of the movie is a married woman who struggles to demarcate the boundary between love and madness. A failing marriage and the onset of a new romance puts her in delirium.
Although the plot is based on Ariana Harwicz's novel of the same name, there are certain things that will be portrayed differently in the movie. One such instance is that, in Ariana's book Die, My Love, the protagonist is a French woman who suffers from extreme mental ailments, shortly after giving birth.
There will reportedly be elements of thrill, horror, and romance. But dark humor will also play a considerable part, as confirmed by Ramsay in her statement:
"It’s about mental health…and the breakdown of a marriage. But it’s really f**king funny. At least, I think it’s funny…But I’m Glaswegian, so I’ve a really black sense of humor."
