The Predator: Badlands teaser trailer has recently arrived online, and it shows the world once again witnessing a brooding relationship between predators and humans. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this sci-fi thriller will be set on a remote planet. It will bring Elle Fanning to the screen as an android who teams up with a predator to fight a much bigger threat. However, as always, it has led to a flurry of reactions from people who are criticizing the new look of the predator.
That is hardly surprising, since the previous franchise film titled Prey (also directed by Trachtenberg) received similar reactions. However, upon release, it received a positive response from critics and audiences alike, putting their worries to rest. Even then, the fans were quick to point out their issues with the new look of this creature. They were mainly unhappy since it did not fit their expectations for the character. Let’s see what the fans are saying about the predator in Predator: Badlands.
Why are fans trolling the new young predator in Predator: Badlands?
On X (formerly Twitter), a user criticized the Predator's look in Predator: Badlands by saying:
"Still to this day, Hollywood can't get the face right since the original. I guess it's a lost art or they don't know how."
Another user added that, although the movie might be amazing, the design is still the worst.
In a Reddit thread, a user wrote,
"I'm not sure how I feel about that very skinny humanish predator. It felt weird and fanfictiony"
Another user said,
"Yeah…. Not a fan of that design. Giving them a new hair (if you can call it that) style just humanises them in a way that they’re really not supposed to be. Looks like he’s gone for some kind of edgy trim. CGI looked a bit ropey too."
While pointing out similar issues, there were also some other balanced takes in the comments. One of them was,
"Hmm ngl...i wasn't a fan of the boyish look the Pred has and the pony-tail looked kinda dumb. Feels weird to have him so expressive and humanized. I feel they want for us to empathize with the Pred, tho i just wanted a badass Predator... I'm still on board tho. The tech looks cool and seems like it will have many interesting weapons and creatures"
Why does the predator look so different in the Predator: Badlands teaser trailer?
The answer is not a mystery, as some might assume. This predator in Predator: Badlands looks more like a human than a creature devoid of human features. He also looks much thinner than how predators have conventionally looked. However, that might be because he is young, as explained in the official synopsis.
On another note, the predator is technically the protagonist in Predator: Badlands, fighting against an anomaly instead of being a menacing anomaly itself. While it may not satisfy the traditional franchise fans who hope to get a taste of what they have already seen, it might be too early to reach a definitive conclusion.
Dan Trachtenberg’s previous Predator film was lauded. So, his latest film might be an interesting change of dynamic that can lead to more complications. What matters is how the predator’s apparent humanization plays out in the bigger picture and offers more than just a creative change. Fans will get a taste of this dystopian world on November 7, 2025, in theaters.
