Emma Mackey cast as White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia movie

According to Deadline, Emma Mackey will portray the cold and evil White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia movie. Mackey had previously worked with Gerwig on her box office blockbuster movie, Barbie.

Gerwig’s upcoming movie with Netflix will be an adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ epic series The Chronicles of Narnia. The movie will be based on the sixth book in the series, titled The Magician’s Nephew, which tells the origin story of Narnia.

Over the last decade, BAFTA winning actress Emma Mackey has established herself as a powerhouse performer. She has given some brilliant performances through her roles in Netflix’s Sex Education, Death on the Nile, and Emily.

In 2018, it was announced that Netflix had bought the rights to adaptations of Lewis’s Narnia books. In 2023, Gerwig joined as writer and director of the new franchise. As per Time, Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s CEO said,

“It won’t be counter to how the audience may have imagined those worlds…but it will be bigger and bolder than they thought."

While Netflix has been tight-lipped about the casting details for the Narnia movie, there were rumors that Margaret Qualley was considered for the role. Meryl Streep is also reportedly joining the cast as the talking lion called Aslan. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Narnia will have a two-week theatrical IMAX run before it streams on Netflix. The movie is expected to be released in late 2026.

Who is the White Witch in Narnia?

Queen Jadis also known as the White Witch is the infamous ruler of Narnia. She puts a curse on the people of Narnia to suffer in a long magical winter that leaves the entire land frozen. Ultimately, after suffering through her tyranny, the Narnians rebel against her in what will come to be known as the Winter Revolution.

In The Magician’s Nephew, Jadis is presented as the last Queen of Charn. She belongs to a royal family, known to have turned evil over time. Jadis is a powerful sorceress. She ends up casting a spell of enchanted sleep on herself so she would be one day rescued from Charn. As the story evolves, Jadis continues to spin her agenda and put her wicked schemes to work.
