Denis Villeneuve is all set to wrap up his Dune trilogy after the major success of the franchise's first two films. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the lead as Paul Atreides, the series has seen some of the most significant achievements of the present time, garnering praise from the audience and major nominations at award shows.

Making a mark as one of the most successful science fiction franchises in recent years, the Dune franchise is already looking at a third extension that will reportedly be released in 2026. Here's everything we know about Dune: Messiah.

In October 2024, Villeneuve revealed where he stood with the upcoming threequel and gave fans a hopeful update about Dune: Messiah. Speaking to Deadline, the director said that the third film “will finish the Paul Atreides arc.” This means that it will be the last project in the franchise as fans get to witness Atreides' legacy.

He further opens up on when production will take place as he adds,

“These movies take a lot of time to be made, so it’s best not to say out loud when I might shoot. Unfortunately, I’m supposed to shut up."

But that doesn't mean Dune: Messiah will take more time! Villeneuve, to fans' excitement, revealed that the film is coming sooner than we think and that he is not taking any long breaks after the release of Dune: Part Two.

“Let’s say that I thought that after Part Two that I will take a break, that I will go back in the woods and stay in the woods for a while to recover. But the woods weren’t really suiting me, and I would go back behind the camera faster than I think. But that’s all I can say.”

In another interview with Digital Spy, the director has said,

"We are in early stages. We are in the right direction. There's a lot of work that has been done, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done in order to have something solid to shoot."

However, several reports have confirmed that Dune: Messiah is set to start shooting this summer and will be eyeing a December 2026 release date.

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides.

Talking about the cast reprising their roles, Villeneuve has said,

“They have to return. They are with the main cast when it happens. And more worms. What can I say?”
