Anna Kendrick played quite an integral part in the first film of The Accountant franchise as Dana Cummings, the character who plays a key role in the plot alongside Ben Affleck's character, Christian Wolff. Dana is a young accountant who gets drawn into the high-stakes world of financial crime when she uncovers a series of irregularities. Her character provides a much-needed contrast to Wolff's stoic and intense persona, offering both a sense of normalcy and a window into his emotional world.
Although her role was significant in the first film, the actress didn't return for the second one. As many continued to query on her absence from the film it was specified that the second story will focus more on Christian and his brother Braxton's relationship and will have less space for Dana. However, directorn Gavin O'Connor is teasing a potential threequel that will feature Kendrick again, which restores fans' hopes of Kendrick's future in the franchise.
Speaking to The Direct, Gavin talked about why they decided to move forward without Dana's character as he said:
"No, it was never—the second film was always for Bill [Dubuque] and I to start to unite the two brothers. Very slowly. They had to start to fix all their s--t, their issues. So, that was always the intention for the second movie."
He then added that Anna might have a role in the third film as he said:
"And the third movie, and I wanted to set up that Chris is still looking for love and looking for connection, which I'm going to explore deeper in the third movie. So, don't be surprised if Dana, Anna [Kendrick] shows up in the third film."
In the first film, Kendrick and Affleck had some sweet moments on screen as the film explored their romantic relationship, something that will most likely be another sub-topic in the franchise's third film.
More details on The Accountant 3
There won't be an eight-year lag between The Accountant 2 and The Accountant 3, according to O'Connor, who made this revelation in an interview at SXSW. He also revealed that him and screenwriter Bill Dubuque have always seen the film as a three-part franchise and that they already have plans for a third film.
“There's always been three. Since post-production, since I started editing the first one. I didn't know Bill [Dubuque]. We met on the first movie. I got the script from Lynette Howell Taylor, and then from the script that I initially got, I started working with Bill. I think any filmmaker’s going to do it. You get a script, you respond to it. How does it affect you personally? But then you keep climbing inside of it. It becomes your own aesthetic and sensibility.”
The Accountant is available to stream on Prime Video. The Accountant 2 is releasing on April 25, 2025.
