Keanu Reeves played Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and one cannot simply overlook his John Wick-like personality when he first overpowered Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails and left on a bike. John Wick really appears to be an unkillable being, and we might see it in the fifth John Wick film.

The same appears to be the case for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as Shadow the Hedgehog survived that giant death ray he tried to stop alongside Sonic. Next, Sonic will be up against Metal Sonics, as we saw in a post-credits scene where Amy Rose appears in a somewhat Thor-like entry. He and the crew might need someone like Shadow to keep this metallic evil at bay.

In Sonic's cinematic universe, the character first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s post-credits scene in a voiceless cameo before finally appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While it hasn't been confirmed, Keanu Reeves' Shadow would certainly be a character fans would want to see in the upcoming film.

How did Shadow survive in Sonic the Hedgehog 3?

The hint of Shadow's survival in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is given in the post-credits scene, where we see his air shoes as he appears in a crater and picks up one of his limiter rings. Now we know he is there on Earth, but we can't say where exactly.

If we consider Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we can expect the fourth film in the series to bring Shadow as an ally. Metal Sonic is considered one of the most prominent villains in the original Sonic storyline, but it seems like the one pulling strings behind the robots shown in the film is the major deal.

That gives us possibilities of Dr. Eggman's (Jim Carrey) survival, as he still has plans to rule over the world. He cleared this up with his grandpa, Professor Gerald Robotnik (again, Carrey), that he would like to keep humanity alive. Of course; otherwise, how would he be able to rule the world?

However, that is unlikely, as Shadow had superpowers that likely saved him from vanishing in the attack.

So what's next for Shadow the Hedgehog now?

The best thing to do with the character would be a spin-off because, let's accept it, he might be an antihero, but he has become an equal to Sonic's likeability. Though Sonic might be the true Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow is just close to that level, too, as we have already seen in the film.

In one interview with Screen Rant, the film's director, Jeff Fowler, may have given us the answer to this. He said while discussing about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Shadow that,

I mean, right now we're just loving that we're here. We're about to share this movie with the world. We're so proud of it. It's huge. I think fans are going to love it, and then we'll go from there.

In December 2024, Variety confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a go, so we can expect a new team-up that hopefully includes Shadow the Hedgehog in it. But then, considering Fowler's comment, it seems like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 may have cleared a way to give the antihero a story of his own, and he might already know where he'll go from here.
