Moana 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Disney's 2016 animated hit, Moana. The movie brings back the iconic characters and voice actors from the first installment and continues the story of Moana, a strong-willed girl in ancient Polynesia.
The second part is set three years after the events of the first and follows Moana as she reunites with the demigod Maui after being contacted by her ancestors. The two then form a group and head on a journey across Oceania to break the curse of God Nalo.
Ever since the first trailer of the movie came out, there have been speculations about Moana having a daughter in the sequel, as fans spotted a little girl in the footage. However, it has been confirmed that Moana does not have a daughter in Moana 2.
Moana does not have a daughter in Moana 2
The speculations about Moana having a daughter in the second installment of the franchise turned out to be false. The discussion began when a little girl was spotted in the teaser trailer of the movie. Some fans even suspected that Maui, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, could be the baby’s father.
However, Moana is still quite young, and Disney would not want to include a storyline about her motherhood. There is also a huge age gap between Moan and Maui, and the two share a bond of only friendship.
Does Moana have a sister in Moana 2?
Moana does have a sister in Moana 2. Named Simea, the 3.5-year-old kid is being introduced in the sequel. Voiced by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Simea is described as a mini-Moana who looks up to her sister and wants to be like her.
The siblings share a special bond, and Moana acts like a guardian and leader for Simea. Co-director David Derrick Jr. revealed that he came up with the baby girl’s character after being inspired by his own family life, as he has a young daughter named Samea.
As for her personality, Simea is just as fierce and energetic as her older sibling. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, head animator Kevin Webb talked about Simea’s character traits and said:
“Simea is going to be just as scrappy and fiery as Moana was when she was little. So, we tried to come up with a strong enough personality for her that we could match Moana's energy on screen, which is a really fun alchemy to play with when you have this 3-and-a-half-year-old version of a character that is very unique in their own way but is still connected to Moana."
Who is Moana's love interest?
Moana did not have a love interest in the first film, and she continues to be single in the sequel. Moana 2 focuses on the self-discovery and adventures of the titular character, who does not necessarily need a romantic partner.
Auliʻi Cravalho, who voices Moana, reflected on the creators’ decision to not include any romantic angle in her character’s life. She explained that Moana is the hero of her own story and has such an interesting personality that she does not need anyone else. Cravalho told Entertainment Weekly:
“Films are always representative of their times. or today's day and age, we want to see a young woman being the hero of her own story. So, yeah, she is a princess, but she's also a hero. I like that those two words are now interchangeable.”
The actress added:
“I feel it's really important to have characters go on their own hero's journey of finding themselves, not necessarily finding a love interest or the love of their lives. Moana is so interesting on her own. She doesn't need anybody else!”
Moana 2 was released in theaters in the US on November 27, 2024.
