Gladiator 1 debuted on screens in 2000, and Gladiator 2 was released on 22 November 2024. This makes 24 years since Ridley Scott's version of ancient Rome hit the big screen. Now bringing our focus to the second part of the original film, it is an epic drama directed by David Scarpa and produced by Scott Free Productions and Paramount Pictures.
Set more than twenty-four years after the first film, the sequel focuses on Lucius, the son of Maximus and Lucilla, the main characters of the first film. We would surely advise you to watch the first film before the sequel to better understand the story.
Gladiator 2 stars Paul Mescal, Connie Nielsen, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and others. Lucius Verus Aurelius becomes a gladiator after General Acacius and the Roman army attack his home. In return, he sets out to destroy Acacius but finds himself fighting as a gladiator for Macrinus, the slave who plans to overthrow the emperors Geta and Caracalla.
Gladiator 2, since its release, has gained critical success and grossed nearly $153 million.

Key factors to keep in mind from the OG movie before watching Gladiator 2
The first film, Gladiator, is set in 180 AD as Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a renowned Roman general, celebrates a victory for Rome. In a private conversation with Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), Maximus learns that he is the chosen successor to restore the Roman Republic to its former position. However, Aurelius' son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) has other plans.
Considered unfit to rule by his father, Commodus murders Marcus Aurelius to gain the throne. When Maximus refuses to swear allegiance to him, Commodus has him imprisoned and orders the murder of Maximus' wife and son. Maximus, faced with the grave loss, is sold into slavery as a gladiator.
The plot of the first film revolves around Maximus' desire for revenge. He is trained by the toughest and most feared gladiator trainer, Proximo (Oliver Reed). Maximus establishes his reputation in the Colosseum and impresses the Roman people with his strength and skill in combat. His first appearance in the arena is a success, but Commodus is unaware of his true identity.
When Maximus reveals his identity and his intention to take revenge, Commodus is furious but cannot kill Maximus because he is too popular. The film chronicles the journey of a gladiator-turned-rebel leader as he attempts to overthrow the corrupt emperor. Commodus’s jealousy leads him to attack Maximus's supporters, including his sister Lucilla.
He finally challenges Maximus to a deadly duel in the Colosseum. Maximus defeats Commodus but also gets stabbed by the emperor. Wounded but victorious, Maximus kills Commodus in front of the crowd. His last wish was to restore the Roman Republic and be reunited with his family in the afterlife.

How is Gladiator 2 related to its original story?
The 2024 version takes place after the first film. The Roman Empire is now ruled by Commodus' unstable twin brothers, Caracalla and Geta. Maximus' hope of restoring the Republic seems lost, and the Empire remains mired in corruption and excess.
We see Lucius, the son of Lucilla and Maximus, in Gladiator 2. Lucius' journey leads to the fulfillment of Maximus' dream of a just Rome. Gladiator 2 explains the aftermath of Maximus' death and how the city continued to fight for the glory it once had.
