A Complete Unknown managed to woo the audience with Timothee Chalamet's masterful portrayal of legendary singer Bob Dylan. The film, which won eight nominations at this year's Oscars, gained wide acclaim from fans and critics, with a lot of praise for Chalamet, who sang his own songs in the film.
Monica Barbaro, who played Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, did an outstanding job as well. The actress revealed in a recent interview that she sang her own songs and played guitar in the film, a simple touch that added a lot more authenticity to her portrayal of the folk singer.
Talking about her experience in an interview with Cosmopolitan, the actress said:
To me, it was a bigger emotional challenge to sing, because I feel like it’s very intimate thing to do. But guitar was so challenging because the articulation of my fingers. I had some sense of my voice on my own, but playing guitar is so technical and so that really intimidated me, and the pace I had to play songs early on was just so excruciatingly slow to get the finger picking coordination. At the end of the day, what I was most worried about was having Joan’s voice in this feel appropriately representative of her voice.
Joan's role in A Complete Unknown is crucial as she is responsible for Dylan's ascend to fame and is a constant throughout his career, often watching him falter and fail. She's also stuck in a love triangle, while Elle Fanning's Sylvie Russo plays his love interest.
