Freddie Gibbs' producer, Madlib, lost his house in mid-January in the still-running Los Angeles wildfires. This loss drew concerns from Gibbs fans regarding the fate of the collaborative album with Madlib, leading to a now-deleted post by NFR Podcast claiming that the album had been lost.
In response to that post, the rapper posted the following message:
"This cap."
To be clear, there has been no confirmation that the collaborative album has been lost, and Freddie Gibbs has not provided any confirmation on the matter as of the writing of this article.
When released, Freddie Gibbs's collaborative album will be the singer's fifth album, having previously released collaborative albums with Madlib, Curren$y, and The Alchemist.
Freddie Gibbs came into prominence with his 2014 collaborative album with Madlib
Freddie Gibbs became prominent in the music industry with the above-mentioned collaborative album with Madlib, Piñata, released on March 18, 2014, via Madlib Invazion. The album was his first chart entry on the Billboard 200 album chart and other major album charts.
Freddie Gibbs talked about the album in an exclusive interview with HipHop DX on April 3, 2013, here quoted via the Web Archive's copy of that article, where he explained that the original title of the album, (Cocaine Piñata), which was changed in favor of Piñata, was inspired by a dream:
"I’ma tell you the truth, man. I had a dream, dog, that I had a little baby. The little baby’s birthday was here and sh*t. You know I like Latina girls and sh*t, man. I want to say all of my girls speak Spanish and shit. Anyways, so the baby would probably be a Mexi-ni*** or some sh*t. So it was like a little ni***-Mexican baby and sh*t."
The singer continued:
"That ni*** wanted a piñata, man, in the dream, man. I don’t know. I must’ve been cooking some dope or some sh*t that week, because the ni*** started hitting the piñata, and it wasn’t sh*t but d*pe falling out the piñata."
The singer continued:
"I was just like, “Damn, man.” They was just kids playing in the d*pe. They was just playin’ in the d*pe. It was little four-year-old kids hitting d*pe in piñatas. I don’t know. It was a crazy as* dream. So, I just called that sh*t Cocaine Piñata."
The singer later added:
"I mean, what does everybody want out of life? Don’t you want a cocaine piñata? Wouldn’t that sh*t be cool? That’s everything you want out of life. You can fit at least two birds in there. If you got two birds in life, you good....So if you started out with a cocaine piñata, you’re pretty straight in life, man. We all tryin’ to get to that cocaine piñata in life."
Freddie Gibbs went on to achieve solo success with his subsequent solo albums, breaking into the commercial charts first with his second studio album, Shadow of a Doubt, released in 2015. He achieved major success in his solo career with his fifth album, Soul Sold Separately, released on September 30, 2022. The album charted within the top 20 positions on the Billboard Top 200.
