Jared Hess' A Minecraft Movie recently surpassed its box office expectations for its opening weekend, but its domestic daily earnings on Monday failed to beat the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Captain America: Brave New World on its first Monday. It earned $9.9 million, falling short of BNW's $11 million on President's Day.
Commercially speaking, the MCU film remained the number one movie at the domestic box office until March 6, 2025, when it was taken over by Robert Pattinson's Mickey 17, which earned $7.7 million in contrast to Brave New World's $2.1 million earnings on the day.
Not even a week has passed since A Minecraft Movie was released on April 4, 2025, so we have to see if it'll stay in the number one spot at the domestic box office longer than Captain America: Brave New World. That means the Jack Black movie needs to stay there for 22 days straight.
But A Minecraft Movie beat Captain America: Brave New World in one big way
By its first Monday, Captain America: Brave New World had earned $100 million. A Minecraft Movie is $72 million ahead in this matter, with its highest earning being $59 million on day 2. Basically, it surpassed the MCU's four-day collection within just two days.
As of this writing, BNW has earned over $400 million globally. However, it needs to reach $600 million to even sniff the profits if the reports are true that its production budget was around $300 million, partly owing to the reshoots, which, according to Seth Rollins, also cut his scenes from the film.
By the looks of it, it appears like the Jared Hess movie will reach close to the MCU film pretty soon; it's just about the matter of momentum. If it stays like this. It's already the second highest-grossing movie of 2025 already, going by its current earnings, followed by films like Snow White, Dog Man, Mickey 17, and more; all of them have earned over $100 million.
Other movies that didn't make the $100 million mark (including global box office) include The Monkey ($68 million), A Working Man ($65 million), Den of Thieves: Pantera ($57 million), and more.
How is the global box office looking at the moment?
Talking about the global box office earnings, Hollywood movies are overshadowed by the Chinese film Ne Zha 2, which is threatening to surpass Avatar (2009) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. It has already entered the $2 billion club.
If we go by the Box Office Mojo data as of this writing, Ne Zha 2 has earned more than the top 26 films collectively. It is safe to say that A Minecraft Movie isn’t coming close to this one in any way.
However, the Chinese film's record might not stay for long, as the Russo Brothers themselves are preparing for back-to-back bangers in the form of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The last time they directed an Avengers film, it earned $2.7 billion at the global box office.
The possibility of it increases when we consider that Marvel revealed 26 names for the Doomsday; the hype for the film is real.
