Captain America: Brave New World's story may not have intrigued the fans as the creators had hoped but there's another story that fans may like. When in the art industry, especially cinema, connections can be crucial; they can open up new doors that even the most talented can't break open.
There have been many cases akin to this. There's Martin Scorsese, who met Robert De Niro via Brian De Palma and then both went on to make some great movies. Then we have David Fincher, who worked with John Korty's studio and there he got to work with George Lucas. One can find several such connections if one reads the history of Hollywood.
Now it's Julius Onah who is in a similar light where we recently got to know that he got to sit on the director's chair for Captain America: Brave New World after Anthony Mackie, who plays the titular Captain America in the film, got a call from Octavia Spencer. Though she wasn't in the film, fans can see her name appear as a 'special thanks' when the credits roll.
Octavia Spencer helped Julius Onah in getting Captain America: Brave New World's direction
It was the new Captain America himself appearing in the latest interview with BlackFilmandTV where he spilled the beans. He told the host while discussing about the new film that Olivia Spencer called and explained that Onah was up for it. He said,
"Octavia calls me, and I'm like, you know when Octavia calls you know it's something going on, so I'm like, 'What's up, girl?' She was like, 'Mackie, you know my friend is up for your movie, and you better get him the job 'cause if you don't, I'm coming to New Orleans and this and that.'"
Although the film was met with a lukewarm reception, it certainly put Onah's name out there in the open. Captain America: Brave New World is the number one movie in the world as we write this, so that's a cherry on the top.
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, he directed Luce in 2019, where he worked with Spencer, which is currently sitting fresh with a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Interestingly, Tim Roth, who played Abomination in The Incredible Hulk (2008), was in it too. though his character didn't end up in the film. But then he might have told him a thing or two, given that the latest MCU movie is no short of the 2008 film's sequel.
How Captain America: Brave New World is going to impact Onah's future
We know a few names who got major recognition after showing they can handle the director's chair well. Joe and Anthony Russo should be at the top of that list given that they gave us films like Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
We must not forget about Jon Favreau, who we know as Happy Hogan, who sort of began the MCU with Iron Man (2008). Julius Onah could get some recognition but it is unlikely that it'll be at the level par with Russo brothers or Favreau.
For now, he currently shares the back of the line with Chloe Zhao and Peyton Reed, who directed Eternals (2021) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), respectively, two of the worst movies in the franchise according to Tomatometer.
