Despicable Me 4 follows the supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), who moves his family to a different location where they have a hard time adjusting. He does that to prevent them from Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell), who plans to avenge them. Meanwhile, Minions transform into Mega Minions while Poppy Prescott plans to become the next supervillain.

How does Despicable Me 4 end?

Towards the end of Despicable Me 4, Gru defeats Maxime Le Mal and reunites with his family. In one scene, he has a meeting at the Anti-Villain League jail with Maxime. Their conversation leads to a duel, which leads to the cameo of several characters from the entire franchise. This includes El Macho, Vector, and Balthazar Bratt, who have appeared earlier. They are the audiences who enjoy the musical fight between the two.

This ending might be used in the future of the franchise, as all the villains are locked up in the same prison. All of them might team up in a potential Despicable Me 5, and more new villains can also be introduced. The film also showcases a complete arc of Gru, who started as a mean villain. As the franchise grew, we also saw him change over time into a kind and understanding family man. His life revolves around his family, and they are his support system.

In an interview with NBC, the film's director, Chris Renaud, was asked if the final villain reunion moment was a 'bookend' in case the story doesn't move forward. In response, he said:

"That was part of my personal rationale. What the future holds, as far where we take Gru and all that, is unknown at this point. But I felt like it was a great opportunity, having worked with these characters for over 15 years now, to have it as a crossover/reunion-type event. If you think of other films that are out there, specifically Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s something the audience has a strong, positive reaction to. It’s just great to see all these things that you’ve enjoyed over the years come together. So again, what the future holds, I don’t know, but it felt like a great moment, given the nature of the scene, to get everybody together."

In the same interview, he was also asked about the future of mega minions. The director said that he is unsure, but they can come up with shorts for that.
