In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer-director Alex Scharfman spoke about his working association with Robert Eggers, the director behind films like Nosferatu and The VVitch, and how it informed his understanding of introducing folklore into his narrative:
“It’s not like I was his research associate or anything, but just passively being around his research and reading his scripts and seeing where his brain was going with his next project, it’s a pretty incredible thing how researched-based he is. So it was an illuminating moment for me, and that became the general philosophical outlook during the early stages of developing this story. I knew that I wanted [Death of a Unicorn] to be a modern monster movie adaptation of unicorn lore from antiquity.”
Scharfman also spoke about his professional relationship with Ari Aster, the director of Hereditary and Midsommar:
"Ari and I had known each other socially, and he was generous enough to speak with me a little bit about directing, just as I was preparing to step into the director’s chair for the first time."
