Death Cab For Cutie's 20th anniversary shows are set to be held from August 2, 2025, to August 10, 2025, in the cities of Brooklyn (New York City), New York, Chicago, and East Rutherford. The band is set to celebrate the anniversary of their album Plans.

Artist presale for the band's 20th anniversary shows will be February 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. local time. Interested patrons can sign up at the official website of the band. A general onsale will follow on February 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. local time, also from the same website.

Death Cab For Cutie announced the new shows via a post on their official Instagram page on February 11, 2025, with the band stating in the announcement:

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of ‘Plans’. To celebrate, we will be performing the album in its entirety in three cities this August. ‘Plans’ is an album that changed the trajectory of Death Cab for Cutie forever — it was our major label debut, it went platinum, and earned us our first GRAMMY nominations."

The announcement continues:

"We are only playing a few shows in its honor as we’re currently working on our next studio album, but we would be remiss to not take the opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary in some fashion."

Death Cab For Cutie released their Plans album on August 30, 2025. Ben Gibbard talked about the album in an exclusive interview with Vice on August 9, 2018, talking about how songs from the album became surprisingly successful:

"That being said, I think the songs that are good on Plans rank among my favorite songs and some of the best songs I’ve ever written. I think “What Sarah Said” and “I Will Follow You into the Dark” alone launched this record into my top half. But I think the record suffered from a little bit of what Photo Album suffered from, which was: we had a pretty quick turnaround."

The singer continued:

"Transatlanticism came out in fall of 2003 and we were in the studio making this record in early 2005, and we had toured our asses off on Transatlanticism. So I was in the ninth inning trying to finish the last couple songs. There are a few songs I see now and think, “Yeah, that one’s pretty undercooked.”

The singer later added:

"I think we all realized the only place to go up from Plans would be if we decided to try to become Coldplay. And no disrespect to Coldplay—I think they’re fine, I like a lot of their songs. But what it would take to attempt to become a band like Coldplay would not only be laughable to our fans and admirers, but like, I don’t want to write songs with super-producers."

Death Cab for Cutie, as mentioned in the tour announcement, are currently working on their new album. The album, when it is released, will be the eleventh studio album.
