Dear Santa is the latest Christmas film you can enjoy this Holiday season. This quirky fantasy comedy has everything you expect from a holiday movie and more! It is both funny and dark. So, it can help parents have some important discussions with their children. More importantly, it stars Jack Black in a devilish central role, whom we know from movies like School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda. He is every bit as entertaining as one would expect him to be!
Directed by Bobby Farrelly, the film follows shy sixth-grader Liam struggling with his school and family life. He finds it difficult to overcome a recent tragedy. As he starts approaching Christmas, he expects a gift like every other year. So, he writes a letter addressing Santa but makes a serious mistake. So, the letter falls into the wrong hands, which leads Liam on a strange adventure. A wicked man suddenly appears in his room and changes his life in many ways.
The film's ending shows a little Christmas miracle bringing Liam's late brother back to life. Let's find out how.
Liam's Mistake in Dear Santa: The Devil's Arrival & Liam's Wishes
Dear Santa shows sixth-grader Liam (Robert Timothy Smith) fighting his insecurities for some reasons. He has dyslexia and poor social skills. So, he fumbles whenever he tries to speak with his classmate and crush, Emma (Kai Cech). The only person who stays by his side is his friend, Gibby (Jaden Carson Baker). Besides, he recently lost his brother, Spencer, and has not gotten over this loss. After that, his parents, Molly (Brianne Howey) and Bill (Hayes MacArthur), often started arguing.
To save himself from this misery, Liam writes a wishlist to Santa but makes a grave mistake. He addresses the letter to 'Satan' instead of 'Santa'. So, in the depths of hell, a devilish man (Jack Black) finds it. Surprised by this letter, he appears in Liam's room. Liam believes this devil is Santa. So, Satan decides to grant his three wishes. Liam talks about wanting to be with Emma. So, Satan helps Liam take Emma to a Post Malone concert.
Satan also grants Liam's second wish to fix Gabby's teeth. Later, he overhears his parents arguing about his dead brother. To fix things, he asks Satan for a third wish to fix his parent's marriage. Satan agrees not to take Liam's soul until he dies. Still, Liam thinks he lost his soul in this deal. So, he behaves rudely, unlike his usual self, and upsets Emma.
Dear Santa ending explained: What happens to Liam's brother in the end?
In Dear Santa, Liam mistakes Satan for Santa and tells his parents about their meeting. Bill thinks Liam is delusional. So, he invites Dr Finkleman (Keegan-Michael Key) to help Liam. Satan interrupts this meeting to take him to the Post Malone concert.
Later, Liam keeps talking about the concert, which worries Molly. So, she and Bill take Liam away from a Christmas carnival, which he wants to enjoy with Emma. Soon, the parents realize that Liam is not lying about the concert. So, Liam gets angry and locks himself in his room. He hears his parents arguing outside the room and uses his third wish for the family's peace.
After granting Liam's final wish, Satan is summoned to Hell. Turns out, Satan is actually a low-level demon, Asmodeus working under his king Lucifer. Lucifer realizes that Asmodeus granted Liam's two selfless wishes. So, he banishes Asmodeus from hell forever and offers just an hour of freedom. So, Asmodeus returns to meet Liam.
Around this time, Liam's parents make up on their own without Liam's intervention. So, the demon offers him another wish. As his final wish, Liam asks Asmodeus to bring Spencer back to life, to celebrate Christmas with the family. Asmodeus makes Liam's wish come true and resurrects Spencer.
The ending of Dear Santa is left intentionally ambiguous and open for interpretation. Technically, the magical plot twist contradicts the film's logic since the demon cannot change the past. Nevertheless, it appears to be Liam's dream, which brings Spencer back to life.
