Hollywood icon Meryl Streep is the latest notable name to have suffered at the hands of the wildfires currently sweeping through Los Angeles. Her nephew Abe Streep recently shared the details of her harrowing escape from her home on January 8th, amidst the total devastation caused by the fires. The 75-year-old actress was forced to cut a large enough hole in her fence for her to make a quick and safe getaway in her vehicle.

"Evacuation mandates were sent across the city. My aunt Meryl Streep received an order to evacuate on January 8, but when she tried to leave, she discovered that a large tree had fallen over in her driveway, blocking her only exit. Determined to make it out, she borrowed wire cutters from a neighbour, cut a car-size hole in the fence she shared with the neighbours on the other side, and drove through their yard to escape."

Meryl Streep Remains Cool Under Fire

While it’s clear that the actor was able to maintain a level head during the debacle, the idea of having to flee your home under these circumstances is understandably terrifying. The wildfires are said to have first ignited in the Pacific Palisades before they managed to spread across Malibu and Santa Monica. The Eaton Fire which was next to happen had its impact felt largely in the Altadena and Pasadena regions.

Countless residents of the city of Angels have been displaced or lost their homes as the casualties continue to mount. In the face of this unmitigated chaos, emergency services have been working tirelessly at containment strategies, while officials are urging residents to stay alert.

Meryl Streep is just the latest celebrity to have been affected by the fires. Several Hollywood mainstays have been vocal about losing their homes to the fires, including Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Bridges, Anna Paris, Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, and Paris Hilton to name a few.

Her longtime friend, and Only Murders co-star Martin Short, was also forced to flee under similar circumstances only a day earlier on January 7th. Short, 74, also a resident of the neighborhood, told Abe Streep that he grabbed his photo albums and fled the high-risk zone upon receiving a call from one of his two sons.

As of Monday, January 28th, the death toll had risen to 29 in the recent days. Click here to learn more about how to help the victims and donate to the cause.
