Companion is a fresh take on the science fiction comedy horror genre. The film is written and helmed by Drew Hancock with Barbarian director Zach Cregger serving as its producer alongside Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, and Raphael Margules.
It follows a couple Irish (played by Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid) as they reunite with their friends at a cabin in a remote location. Soon, the duo realizes that one of their friends is not a human but a robot.
Here's the official synopsis of the film,
A billionaire's death sets off a chain of events for Iris and her friends during a weekend trip to his lakeside estate.
Companion was released on January 31, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Besides its plot, the film's soundtrack has also attracted attention.

What is the plot of Companion?
The film follows a couple, Iris and Josh who decide to move to a cabin in a remote location during the weekend. They are joined by their friends and some guests to have a good time. Soon, the two realize that one of their guests is a humanoid robot meant to provide companionship to humans. But things go wrong when that robot goes out of control.
The film stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid in the lead roles as the couple. Other cast members include Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillen, Rupert Friend, and Matt McCarthy among others.
Speaking to Bloody Disgusting, Hancock spoke about how the comedy bits were added later in the film. He said,
“Just to back it up a little bit, the purpose of writing this movie was that I was in a place in my career where I wasn’t really getting the opportunities that I’d wanted; I’ve always been a gigantic genre fan, like horror, sci-fi, and thrillers. I was working in the comedy world, and I love comedy. But my sweet spot, the thing that I love, is genre. During Covid, it kind of forced me to sit down and go, ‘Well, why aren’t you getting the opportunities that you want?’ I realized it was my own fault. I realized I didn’t have a writing sample that represented the kinds of movies that I like."
